I think it would be better if people had a relative point in time they could compare posts to when they were posted compared to the present time they are reading them. For example, if a poster makes a post 2 hours ago, it would say "2 hours" ago, allowing the reader to know when the post was made at a glance instead of keeping track of the current time.

I hafta agree. I want fresh posts to say "1 minute ago" again.

It's like the WF equivalent of "hot off the presses" :soma:

It was weird at midnight having a fresh new post labeled "yesterday".

Your computer comes with a timekeeping device in the lower righthand corner. Allow me to demonstrate how to effectively use it:

You made this post at 9:02 PM. It is now 11:20 PM. That means you made this post 2 hours ago.

See how easy that was? ;)

But seriously, if it's possible I think users should be given the choice in their User CP between the old n' busted and the new hotness ways of telling time on WF.

    I like this new stuff.

I'm shit at remembering the fact that there's a time difference, so if I see something that says "posted 8 hours ago" I'm more likley to think "welll.. it WAS 8 hours ago... maybe someone will be back to amuse me soon!" whereas when it says "posted at 5am" that reminds me that the most active time ISNT when I'm going to be awake, because most of you are a zillion miles away in the past.

    If that makes any sense....

I like the new setting mainly because it is precise. If the old said "2 hours and 3 minutes ago," rather than "2 hours ago," then I'd agree that the board shouldn't require us to all be math whizes in order to understand when a post was made. But the vagueness of the old system was unacceptable!

Can the "absolute" or "relative" timeframe be made into a User option, or must it be one way or the other for everyone? :flow2:

It isn't really that bad, but I wish posts within the last couple hours could specify exactly how long ago they were posted. It gives everything a sense of immediacy.

People can disagree all they like as long as it is civil.

Of course, sometimes it just doesn't matter, and the answer is no.

Now, I am not saying that is the answer here, none of the tech guys have commented one way or another.

Though, personally, I am a bit surprised how much discussion there is over a timestamp. I am pretty stupid and I haven't had any problems telling the time. But considering how some are having issues, if there is a way we can have a display like "2 hours ago at 1:13 PM" it would be ideal.

On second thought, please remove the timestamp completely. If the poster is so lazy as to not post what time he's making a reply, it must not have been that important.

According to the timestamp, you're off by one minute.

All the more reason to abolish the timestamp. Incorrect timestamps are worse than no timestamps at all.

It's time to stamp out timestamps.

    And maybe ban Packard, too.

    From orbit.

    Just to be sure.

We don't have the time to talk about timestamps. This just isn't the right time.

Abolish the timestamp, and create random threading. Then it will be up to everyone to just know when a post was made in order to understand the conversation. We will all just need to be here 24 hours a day from now on!
