Wait a minute, some people are IMMUNE TO HIV ???
That was NOT in my high school health class!
Can my Doctor check for that in my lab work?

Oh, and this guy had leukemia AND HIV? Talk about a bad day at the Doctor's office.

Doctor: "Tim I'm got some bad news..."
Tim: "Oh No, is it caner?"
Doctor: "No, no, nothing like that..."
    Tim: "well that's good."
    Doctor: "...it's leukemia."
Tim: "Nooooo!!! Why God why! My life can't get any worse!"
Doctor: "um, about that... you have AIDS too."

Not only that, but in parts of sub-Saharan Africa, where infection rates are very high, there's a form of "natural selection" occurring amongst prostitutes. Life expectancy for most is very short, however those who are immune are becoming more numerous as they have normal lifespans.

As the article notes, HIV isn't a death sentence in the western world any more, and many can live with it the same as with any minor disability. There's a senior politician in the UK who is HIV positive.

    Yup.
There was a PBS special about it some years ago.

They're mutants, and they tracked back the mutant gene, and they're descended from people who were also immune to the Bubonic Plague.

    Handy little gene, that.

I'm guessing the former was a result of the latter, 'cuz a lot of HIV patients end up with some form of relatively rare illness from the lack of immune system.

In addition, many children born with HIV have been known to "outgrow" it.

Wow...I knew Soakie and Kirky were stupid and evil, but pro-AIDS??

    Holy shit.

I just can't seem to esteem them low enough, they find new ways to stun.

An incredible breakthrough if true. Shocking really, hard to believe HIV has gone from a fatal contagion of unknown origin and transmission, to a disease that isn't a guaranteed death sentence, and now there's the possibility of a cure? At best I'd thought we'd eventually come up with a vaccine.

My bad...going on outdated info. Several years ago there were case reports of kids testing positive at birth but negative post-18 months, and some specialists were calling this a "cure."

    Now they're saying this instead:

My layman's guess (and I can dig for more info if anyone's interested) is that because the neonate has its mother's antibodies for the first few months (longer if she's breastfeeding), that may give the false positive reading.

Should have known it was too good to be true.

So, hmmmn. Some people are immune. They should let people pay for tests to see if they are immune or not. Some people might want to know if they are a 1%er or not.

No, I was jut thinking that the prostitutes might want to know this before the go into business. I mean most of the other stuff penicillin can cure. Course most of them chick are on a lot of hard drugs and stuff, so they are not long for this world.

Back in December of '88 or '89, I can remember seeing a news story about an AIDS patient who was given a bone marrow transplant and later died from cancer. Before he died, they couldn't find any sign of AIDS, after he died, they ran extensive tests on his tissues and found no detectable levels of HIV in any of them. The doctors kept stressing that this was "not a cure," but did not give any explanation (nor did the airhead interviewing them ask) as to why.

In the years since, I've heard that the reason a bone marrow transplant couldn't be considered a cure is due to the difficulty of finding a matching donor. However, this is a case where stem cell research might offer a solution, since one could, in theory, use stem cells to create HIV free bone marrow that would be accepted by the patient.

I've also heard that the HIV immunity of prostitutes isn't as good as once was hoped. It seems they're fine so long as they're exposed to a limited number of strains of the virus, but when they hit a strain radically different than any that they've been exposed to, they quickly succumb to the disease and die.

Smallpox exposure is thought to have conferred some immunity to HIV as well.

Slow down there a minute, cowboy. Forget the fact that vasectomies can reverse themselves, there's not a universal drug cocktail that's guaranteed to keep you alive if you contract HIV before the stem cell (remind me again who didn't like those things) treatment becomes the norm. Yeah, I know, I thought all one has to do is swallow a fistful of pills if they're HIV+, and everything is somewhat golden. Turns out that's not the case. There's a process by which they have to tune the dosage and the kinds of drugs needed to keep you alive. This can take months or more. The longer you go between infection and treatment, the worse your outcome is because of how long it can take to tune your drug regimen. And yeah, even under the best of circumstances, the disease can kill you before they figure out what drugs you need to keep you alive.

So maybe don't nail anything that moves or grab whatever pops out of a gloryhole just yet.
