This rather long email is the Official Guide for Forum Moderators (TM).

It is designed to be read as a plain text document using a fixed width font - Courier New at size ten, with wordwrap at 79 characters.

Please, take the time to read it through, because it contains lots of information on not only the principalities of being a mod - how to move threads and the like - but advice on dealing with people and other issues. Keep it somewhere on file for future reference. A read through the BBS Rules one more time before you read it will also help.

What, you mean you don't know them by heart yet???

One of the first things you should do after becoming a Trek BBS Moderator is CHANGE YOUR PASSWORD. You should not use the same password for your Trek BBS account as any other password.

The other account security matter regards email. Please link your main Trek BBS email up to a secure, pop, none-web based email account if at all possible. These are the things that come with ISPs and have to be read with an email client like Outlook or Outlook Express. If this isn't possible or you have worries about privacy, hassle me about getting a @trekbbs.com email address. Moderators with free web based email and using silly passwords for their account have been MAJOR security leaks for us in the past.

You'll also want to sign up for the moderators email list. It exists primarily so that all the moderator emails are in one place, so we can get in touch with one another when we need to. Sometimes important communication are sent out though it ? like this very email you?re reading now. To subscribe, send a blank email from whatever address you wish to sign up with to staff-subscribe@trekbbs.com To send an email to everyone on the Trek BBS staff at the same time, send it to staff@trekbbs.com

Throughout this document, when I say: BR I mean the Briefing Room, the staff only forum. This will magically appear when you get your status. QSF I mean the Questions, Suggestions & Feedback Forum. MA I mean moderator actions.

Now, on with the guide...

THE BOARD RULES

The rules document is the ethos behind the TrekBBS. Much more than being a set of rules for admins, members and mods, it represents the ideas that make the board what it is and what we aim to be the best discussion board on the internet, Trek or otherwise It says that all members have a right to be treated fairly an in accordance with a clear set of rules. It says that every opinion is welcome here and that flaming will not be tolerated. Members are free to post those opinions without fear that someone will delete their words. It clearly lays out what is out of line and will not be tolerated on the board, and what will happen when a member crosses one of those lines. It promotes what we're all about - we're a DISCUSSION board, and facilitating discussion is what we, in our role as moderators, are all about.

History: Let's travel back in time to the dim and distant past. The place: Trek BBS. The time: 1999 or early 2000. The board at that time had no clear set of rules. If an admin didn't like the way a thread was heading, the thread was closed. If he did not like a member, they often found themselves banned.

Understandably, a lot of members and moderators supported this way of acting. After all, he was acting in the best interests of the board, to keep it free of troublemakers and a good place to visit, right? Those bright sparks at the front of the class will have already sensed something wrong with this way of doing things. What controls were on this arbitrary system? What if you were punished unfairly? Did you have a right to complain? Well, to redress the balance and to create a board that truly knew the meaning of the word 'discussion' the BBS Policy was drawn up. It clearly lays out what's forbidden and what isn't. With the policy, we defined what people could and could not do. And that 'people' includes members, but perhaps more importantly, moderators and administrators too.

In 2002, Christian and I changed the name of the Policy to the Rules. The reason for this wasn't just because I found it amusing to give all those people who wanted us to do away with the Policy what they wanted, either. The changes at the time were a major revision and one which we felt justified the name change.

One of the major complaints about the old policy was that it was too long and difficult to understand. It had too many clauses and twists and turns.

Christian re did the layout to its current tabled format, and we both worked hard to keep the language used simple and clear. One complaint that is still levelled at this newer version of our policy document is that it's TOO short and doesn't include all the information that the old one did. While I can see why this is annoying, especially from a moderator point of view when you're looking for something specific to back up what you need to get across to the members, having a document that's not too overwhelming is vitally important. One of our aims with the newer version was to keep it to the essential parts only. I think it does pretty well at this.

Ask me again though when I've revised it about 15 times and I'll probably hate it.

WHAT DOES A MODERATOR DO?

So, You're a Trek BBS moderator?

Woohoo!

Congratulations! And Commiserations. It is significantly more difficult a job than most people think. However, it also has some quite nice rewards too.

As a moderator, you should be interested in Trek BBS. Now you're on the staff you'll see just how things are run here and WHY we do the things we do. If you don't know, you'll have the opportunity to ask the people who actually have the authority to answer: and make changes if you suggest something new. You'll know that you're contributing to the community in the best and most hands on way possible and you're helping that community remain strong. You'll begin to look at things from a different angle that doesn't occur to most members. And you can see the little warning triangle icon at the bottom of posts that lets us warn people - normal BBSers can't.

So... what do you have to do? Well, you're responsible for making sure that no posts made in your forum violate the BBS Rules. You were picked as a moderator because you are the epitome of a good poster: you are the example we want everyone else to learn from. You have a responsibility to uphold that, which sounds quite scary. But isn't it nice being told that you're the best of the best? You are also the 'leader' of your particular forum, with a responsibility to make sure the forum runs well, and is attractive to old timers and newbies alike. Those are your aims and responsibilities as a member of staff.

Do you have to read every post in your forum? Well... as many as possible. In the larger forums, you'll have a co mod so you can divide up the grunt work between you. Getting used to scanning posts for content that might need attention is a vital skill for mods. It'll come with practise.

The 'Notify mod' button at the bottom of all posts might help too. When someone presses that button, you'll be sent an email with the post someone has requested you to take a look at in it. Checking your email is very important. However, if one particular user abuses the function, do let us know so we can hit them.

DECIDING IF SOMETHING NEEDS A WARNING

To commit 'an offence' a poster has to directly violate a section of the BBS Rules. It's not enough for you to suspect them of doing so or pre-emptively issue a warning to stop them doing something: they MUST commit an offence before they can be issued a warning.

However, frequently posters like to skate on the edge of the rules and it can be hard to make a clear cut decision. As moderators, we have to try out best to be impartial. It's important to examine a situation from all sides; from the offender, the staff, the policy, and the 'neutral' average poster.

First of all, examine the post from the point of view of the member who posted it. What was his motivation in posting that message? Was he trying to make a joke? Was he out to offend or provoke someone? Or was he innocently getting swept up in a discussion? Were they posting to spam? And does what he posted go against a section of the rules?

Then look at things from the point of view of the injured party. Was he over-reacting? Is he looking to cause trouble and provoke in his reaction? Does he flame back?

From the point of view of the other posters: What would you feel if you were a poster who came across this exchange? Would you feel offended? Would you laugh? Would you expect something to be done about it?

From a moderator point of view: Would action be backed up by the rules? Do you think action is necessary? Is taking action likely to offend a lot more people? Are you comfortable issuing a warning in this case?

It is very difficult to say that "X type of behaviour" is a warnable offence. It generally depends on circumstances, motivation and context. Learning to recognise the different elements of behaviour is something that gets a lot easier as you tackle more of the general types of situations you'll encounter as a mod. Experience pays and we all get better by getting out there and doing it.

As a general guide though, here are my thoughts on a couple of common areas:

Using shocking language isn't a rule violation. Unless an insult is directly given to another member of the BBS, then it's not a flame: how can it be a flame unless an individual is targeted? Questioning an opinion is fine. It's when clear cut personal insults start flying that we need to get involved. Make sure that it IS clear cut: it is ok to let minor things slide - *shock, horror* Yes, I did say that. We're a DISCUSSION board and we flourish by allowing people to discuss what they like; within reason as laid down by the board rules. We should only intervene in those discussions when absolutely necessary. If people are resolving a situation by themselves, leave it alone. If things aren't getting madly out of hand, leave it alone.

We shouldn't get involved unless absolutely necessary, and you should be handing out warnings where only UNAVOIDABLE.

Never, ever delete a post. You should only edit a post for SERIOUS language or pornographic content, or something equally drastic.

I always like to give people second chances. Unless you feel that it is a VERY clear cut case of a rule violation or the person has been told about it before, I like to give a verbal warning first. Warnings should be handed out as a last resort. Go into the thread first and request that people calm down: this can avert a crisis before it spirals out of control in many instances. A common complaint against moderators is that we are too quick to warn. Sometimes that complaint has validity. This is why it is VITAL that you examine all other options before you issue a warning. Remember: we don't LIKE issuing the things. We should all be doing everything we can to avoid it.

If you aren't sure what to do in a particular instance, then ask for help. Post in the Briefing Room or send an ICQ message. And don't worry too much if you make a questionable call.

We all do. Mistakes are often the best way to learn.

If you issue a warning and are still worried, the best thing I find is to sleep on the decision. Taking back a warning often takes more
courage than issuing one does. At times it seems like people out there expect the moderators to be infallible super beings. We're not: we're human and we're certainly allowed to make mistakes.

It's important to know your foum. The rules are the same throughout the board, but different forums have different atmospheres. A comment might fly in one forum that would result in an over the top response in another. Knowing the atmosphere and personalities of your forum will tell you when you need to step in or leave well alone.

WARNINGS

When you're ready to issue a warning in a forum, the first thing to do is stop and think.

Are you sure that this infraction deserves a warning? Is it clearly covered by the rules?

Is this the LAST RESORT - do you feel as if you have NO CHOICE but to issue one?

The next thing to do is take a deep breath. No matter what the little @@~*!! on the screen in front of you did/called another member/called your aunt Mable; it's really important that we still act responsibly. As moderators, we're the arms and legs of the BBS Rules, and if that (and therefore the board) is going to be respected and taken seriously by our members, then we have to try to take the high ground whenever we can. That means responding and issuing a warning calmly.

PROCEDURE

Warnings should take a form something similar to this:

- Quote the part of the post the member is being warned for.

- Quote the part of the board rules that says this is an offence.

- State clearly that member X is receiving a warning in accordance with BBS policy. Make sure to highlight their name in bold.

- Provide a link or say that any discussion concerning this action should take place in the QSF Forum.

- Hit the little warning triangle at the bottom of the post to be taken to the utility screen where you can enter the warning.

- Done!

TROLLS

Trolls post to get a reaction. They want to see you loose your cool. If you get into an argument with them, then you're giving them what they want. Tempting as it may be to put the idiotic little upstart in his place, please, don't give them that satisfaction.

Don't refer to someone as 'a troll' on the board if you can help it. Understandably, it won't make them react in a positive manner. If the members see a member of staff labelling a person, they'll often seize on this. Remember the golden rule: do not feed the trolls.

Sometimes it's worth remembering that some people do not want to be reasoned with. You might find yourself being quoted out of context which can come back to haunt you and the rest of the staff later. In most cases, it is better to say nothing than play into the hands of a troublemaker.

QSF & MODERATOR ACTIONS

These two forums can be a real nightmare at times.

When you read it as a member all that complaining and fighting can make you feel like the board is not a nice place. As a staff member when you could be one of those in the middle of a controversy, it can be downright daunting. Remember that neither is indicative of the state of the board in general.

90% of the members do not even visit these forums and will only need to complain on rare occasions.

But they are very high profile forums. Troublemakers will often make a beeline for either forum, because they know that all the staff read them. Posting in there is a great way to make sure an issue gets some attention.

Believe it or not, the latest idiot posting about injustice in MA can be a good thing.

Why? Because he's not doing it on the rest of the board. If trollish activity could be confined to one forum, the board would be a much nicer place. And of course, issues raised in either forum just might be justified and relevant to your own position. For this reason, it is important for mods to all keep a close eye on both QSF and MA. So please, read them regularly.

You can help out in both forums a great deal. Very often FAQ type questions crop up, which are explained in one of the board FAQS or are just commonly known to more established members. Moderators helping answer these questions in the forum really helps. Plus, it makes it look like we have a nice helpful staff.

Undoubtedly, at some point a member will have an issue with an action you took in your forum and will post about it in MA. Because we care about our members and want them to respect our system, it would really help if you responded.

BUT: it will only help if you respond calmly and carefully. If we've got an angry member here, the last thing we want to do is make them even more angry. Calmly explain why you felt action was necessary. Quote the bits of the thread and the bits of the rules. If they were clearly breaking the rules and have it clearly explained to them, most members will back off.

There are several other occasions where either forum can turn into a danger zone for staff.

The first of these areas is where mods are responding to a member in a different capacity. Please, don't feed the flames of anger.

Secondly, we sometimes end up with a problem when moderators rush to the defence of their friends or fellow mods. This can have the effect of making it look like we're a gang of bullies ganging up on an injured party, unwilling to listen to any point of view but our own. While the urge to support a friend can be very strong, please think carefully before you rush in.

If in doubt, it is always much better not to respond. Remember, we're not under any obligation to engage on a nitpicking argument with anyone. Respond clearly and succinctly to rational comments. Don't respond if you're getting angry, feeling tired worried about posting something you may regret when cooler heads prevail. Remember that we're the arms and legs of the policy, and we have to act in a manner that allows members to respect us and the board. Engaging in a petty argument will only inflame the aggressor, and not make anyone at all look good.

THE NEED FOR A THICKER SKIN

It's general practice that small jibes at members of the staff in the official forums will be let go without a warning.

Why? Because moderators are bound to come in for a certain amount of criticism as part of their job. We accept this when we join the staff. No one likes being insulted. But when we're posting in one of those forums, people don't respond to us as people, but to the positions we occupy. They're flaming the SYSTEM that warned them, that showed them up in front of their friends, or that they don't understand. They're not attacking YOU personally.

As members of staff, we should be able to take the higher ground and be able to let these things slide off our Extra-Toughened-Moderator-Skins. Developing one of these is an essential part of learning how to moderate. If you don't develop one, you will go insane. Well, perhaps not quite so extreme, but you will find it VERY difficult to deal with the amount of flack that we, as members of staff, inevitably attract.

Part of the reason QSF and MA exist to keep attacks and criticism of the rules out of other forums. Better that they vent their frustrations there than that they build up an even larger grudge against you and it spills over in the regular forums.

Why isn't this explicit in the rules?

Because if the rules say 'If you flame a member of staff in an official forum, you won't get warned' that would actually encourage people to flame the staff to their heart's content. This isn't something we want.

If someone has just registered and has 20 posts and then gets a warning, and he then responds to that in a rather heated manner in QSF, there are two ways to go:

1) He can get a warning for responding in that way and hold a grudge against the staff.

2) He can get a calm explanation of what happened which may cause him to rethink his behaviour.

Obviously one outcome is far better than the other.

THREAD CONTROL

Yes, the REAL business of being a moderator. This is what you came here for, isn't it?

To close or move a thread (commonly known as the WOOSH click the EDIT button on any post in the thread in question. Under the usual edit options on the screen that follows that you'll be used to seeing as a member, there are a new row of buttons under the heading 'Manage this thread.' You'll be seeing a lot of these. Just click the CLOSE THREAD button to close it down. REMEMBER that you should have posted an explanation of why you're taking that action in the thread before you do so. That's all there is to it.

Moving threads is just as easy. Hit the MOVE THREAD button and chose the forum you want to move it to from the drop down list on the next screen. Check the 'leave a pointer' box so people know where the thread has gone, and enter your message. Then hit submit, and the thread will zoom off to its new forum.

You can edit any post in your forum in the same manner as you'd edit one of your own. You should never delete posts or threads unless REALLY necessary: an edit is ALWAYS better than a delete.

The KEEP THREAD button marks the thread so that it won't be pruned in the next round of forum maintenance. If there's an important or popular thread, you might want to use this option. I use it for threads that contain answers to common questions so I can refer back to them.

THE WARNING UTILITY

TheAmazing Verteron wrote this wondrous piece of coding. I'm sure you'll have seen it as a member - its linked in the sidebar with the FAQ and board rules. As a moderator, you'll be seeing your name in it

- just in a different column than most members.

It's really easy and straightforward to use: it's integrated with the board software so most of the clever things it does are automatic.

Go take a look at a post in your forum. There should be a new icon at the bottom of any post - a warning triangle thing. Click it.

You'll be taken to the screen that lets you issue warnings for that particular post.

Easy, isn't it?

SECURITY

Please. Please please please don't save Briefing Room threads to your own computer. Don't pass them on to friends. Don't discuss topics raised in the Briefing Room with friends outside the forum, especially not on the board itself. Moderators need a private forum to discuss the details of running the board, and the Briefing Room is kept private for a reason. Please, don't anger anyone else by sharing information from this private forum.

It might sound obvious - but change your password regularly, and don't pick an obvious password. We've had major trouble when mods used 'Picard' and 'Voyager' for either their Trek BBS accounts or their email accounts. Please don't fall into the same trap.

Along the same lines, please don't pass on this email. It is intended to be for moderators only.

The above line has been in this document since the very beginning. Predictably, it has been posted on message boards in complete form. I repeat, do not share this document. Am I going to have to add threats to the next version?

Communication with the rest of the staff is important: it is vital if you have co-mods sharing the duties in a forum. making sure you're all on the same page and with a similar attitude to situations that arise will make your job easier, the forum a nicer place to be - and more fun. Discussing things with others is better than tackling them alone. ICQ is the best way to do this.

It is supposed to be a working forum, not full of smart comments that we have to wade through to get to serious issues.

I vaguely remember one run in with either her or her lackey Kass when I very first registered at TBBS under my other account (not the Anna Yolei one). For the most part, I stuck to the Enterprise/ Voyager forums. It wasn't till I registered here that I went to the TNZ/Briar Patch, but Bonz was in charge by then.

Folks,

First of all, let me say that the contents of this email need to remain
confidential. I realise that a lot of you might be insulted by me saying
that, but I needed to say it all the same. Please, keep this to
yourselves

Unless you've been slacking off today (and if so, WHY? you'll have
noticed that Trek BBS is down. Here's a little note to let you all know
why, how we're responding, what's happening and just to ease your
withdrawal.

First off, why is the board down?

It's down because a lovely individual keeps targeting the server. Two of
them have been at it for weeks. According to Christian, who has access
to the server control panel, two individuals from cable.rogers.com and
nexicom.net keep targeting us. The former is responsible for the jumps
in member numbers we've had over the past few days. Around 6 thousand
member accounts were registered, that of course, caused the server to
crash. Sometime today, they seemed to up their goal a bit and the server
couldn't handle it. We lost the index file to the member directory as a
result, along with quite a lot of member files. Contrary to popular
rumour, we didn't lose the member database. Not least because we don't
HAVE a member database, but that's beside the point. MOST member
files are safe.

As a result, the decision was taken to close down the BBS. Since we keep
being targeted in this manner, we couldn't run the risk of further
damage being taken.

This also forced the hand on another issue. The software upgrade.
A little while ago, we came to the realisation that Christian just
wasn't able to complete the board upgrade. He's had less and less time
to spend on the board (more on this later) and continuing software
issues made the whole project more problematic than ever anticipated.
But we needed new software 8 months ago. The current stuff just can't
cut it and is vulnerable to attack. So what to do?

Well, bring in Infopop staffer and wondrous individual Charles Capps.
He's going to handle the conversion and software customization for us.
And he's going to do it this weekend.

Believe me, this is significantly faster than any of us, including CC,
had planned. I had insisted all along, that any software upgrade would
need a period before hand where the staff could get to know the new
software. Thank you, trolls.

This has a bad side.

It means that the new software wont be as specifically tailored to Trek
BBS needs as we would have liked. It won't look like the old software as
much as we'd have liked.

However, it won't be as vulnerable to attack. It will have cool new
features. It will be less prone to buggering up. And because it won't
have so many hacks, it means we can keep up with new releases and
upgrades. Plus, coz CC is handling it, we've got a man who does this for
a living on our side. As someone who's benefited from his council when
I've been online alone in the middle of the night when the BBS was
buggering up and no idea how to fix it, having him to help is a very
good thing indeed.

So the plan is new software this weekend. As soon as possible.
I realise this is throwing you all in at the deep end. However, I've
never seen the inside of a UBBThreads control panel either. I guess
we'll be learning together.

There's another change coming with the software though. Another pretty
major one.

Christian is going to resign from the Trek BBS.

He doesn't have the time to devote to the board it needs. You'll
probably all have noticed this. More and more it resulted in him taking
an action or decision, leaving me to enforce and explain something I
didn't actually have the power to do. Rule upgrades are impossible when
the guy in charge isn't around to discuss them with. Things that needed
doing by the guy in charge haven't been done. You guys, as a staff need
to feel that the support you're getting comes from the highest possible
authority. I need to feel that I CAN take action where I feel its
necessary. I need to be getting the blame for stuff I've actually done
rather than covering for.

Trek BBS, in the structure of the sites, has always been on the
backburner. It's never received quite the attention it needs. Until I
started on TrekToday, there wasn't a regular administrator that had
server access - i.e one that could fix a broken member file, amongst
other things. This situation is just about to change. Trek BBS is going
to get someone running it who has access to all the important bits on
the server and who is focused on the BBS. Not on making sure the server
is running, not on making sure we have information on Patrick Stewart's
latest play up on the site, but on making sure the BBSes are ok. They've
never had this before.

You mean you're wondering who's going to be in charge now?
Let's just say if you were holding off on the chocolate and ?50 notes
supplies to my home address, now would be a good time to get them in the
post.

Seriously, if anyone has a problem with this, now would be the time to
discuss it with me. Board matters should no longer go to Christian.
The first priority for the Trek BBS is going to be new software. Then
it's going to be me surviving Christmas and all the work I have to do
before January 15th. After that, I'm going to be looking at things like
board rules.

Nothing dramatic is going to change at first. Things will still be run
to the same board rules and ethos they've always been. There might be
some minor changes here and there, but nothing too dramatic. For one
thing, it's going to take me some time to start thinking about things
the way I want them, rather than how I know Christian wants them. I had
a strange experience recently in a QSF thread, where someone requested
that old thing - why don't we have a Trek movie forum? I was about to
hit the reply button and post 'Christian feels that the movies are most
appropriately discussed in TOS or TNG' or something, when I realised
that wasn't necessarily the case any more. I asked MYSELF how I felt
about a Trek movie forum, and found I was quite receptive to the idea.
It was a strange and quite exciting feeling.

We're going to be going through a lot of changes, finding our way both
with new software and a new leadership structure. It's not going to be
easy, but I think the payoff of both changes is going to be really great
for the BBS. I hope I can count on you all while we get through them
together. And that you'll all bear with us while we get things sorted
and find our own way.

But, if your admins think it's funny to allow such destructive behavior, you need to rethink your staff choices. Because, I know that eventually someone will follow through with a legal threat. If other people take identity theft as seriously as I do, you'll land yourself in some serious trouble.

As for the legal threats, I won't make any more unless I feel like I'm truly being threatened by TK directy, as a whole, or by a member of TK's staff.

I'm not opposed (though not really for) messing with the odd poster once in a while. But the general gist of things seems to have geared towards an "us vs them" mentality.

I switched Henoch's and Sarek's avatars then locked them out of changing them back for less than 24 hours. Besides being funny which this is not it was something done as a joke for the sake of the joke and nothing else.

Messing with the two biggest posting factions on the board is just interference. Stop me if I'm wrong but surely as admins we are here to improve the board for everyone. Not just our own potential amusement?

Of course I went ahead and did it anyway. The boards were just mass merged together. All other staff were locked out. There were spammer race riots in the threads.

Hambil was called in to rescue the adminCP and restore order. The Badlands were recreated and those posters affiliated with The Badlands had their posts purged from The Minefield and then dumped back into the lesser spam cesspit. Members marked as Badlanders weren't particularly happy about their painfully obvious lower caste status.

Introduction

This is Cass, and I have been watching you. Not because you're so good looking (yet I think
Soma is and everybody's Soma anyway), but to give the administration a hand in
straightening out the current set of problems that plague Wordforge. When I first started
lurking here after my return, I thought I'd see the usual downturn of summer. But after
watching for a few days I had the impression that there is something more. Some of the
most prolific posters have simply left, some to refill their trollish energy, some because
this energy was used on them before. Some, or so I heard, were even busy in real life. And
& there seemed to be a disturbance in the old WF rule that 'they all come back' sooner or
later.

In accordance with Borgs I have been posing as a newbie for some days now, as long as I
would think that a newbie would give the place a chance before leaving again. The admins
and supermods were informed from the beginning as they wield the big IP stick, and
unfortunately Diacanu was bored one night and looked where Caelia was surfing and it was
A51, so the mods knew too from that moment forward. Which is rather unfortunate given
that I wanted a complete picture, but hey.

In this report I will try to point out some of my experiences with being a newbie on this
board and why it's not easy to feel welcome. I will also give a little food for thought re.
how to lure a few new members on board. Mind you, I don't care if you actually use any of
it or if you just use this to troll Cass. I won't be returning any time soon, so do whatever
you want - yet maybe you find one or two ideas to be smart.

There are two of these reports. One is for the membership, one for the staff. I shall put
the staff one in A51 - it's 95% or so identical with this one and just includes a few links to
places of reference. I'll leave it at the discretion of the administration to publish it or not.

If you find stuff that I have been guilty of too - yes I know. Nobody is perfect, and I'm the
past.

Moderation

Looking at the state of moderation on WF is a rather sad affair. What do we have?

- 2 mods in every forum, including a completely unexperienced one bound for B&M.
More on Listkeeper later, but the whole deal just screams over-moderation. I don't
think there's anybody from the 'old crew' by now who hasn't been mod at some
point. It all boils down to catching the antics of only a handful of posters. It's a
clear case of too many generals with too little troops. Or a kindergarten class full of
sociopaths that require very special attention.

- Sloppiness and hypocrisy. Where's the good old mantra that everybody should be
responsible for him/herself? It's not the duty of the WF staff to react to things that
happen on another board, even if there's a connection to here. And & if you
absolutely have to point ban somebody to feel better, don't forget the hubby's
account next time. Adm. Bonz was online a lot in the past few days. This
combination of interference with member's online lives, other board's actions and
extreme sloppiness looks unprofessional at best.

- Analogue to the above, the special treatment of 'special' members does look rather
strange given all the talk about free speech. Almost like Bush talking about liberty
when really he means bombing somebody into letting them rob of their natural
resources voluntarily. When I returned here after my Sri Lankan adventure, I
campaigned to free baba. Not because I don't get that he's a nuisance to some.
Because it's completely un-WF-ish to single out members and punish them for how
they are (cue standard 'but you did it to Storm!!!111!!1' screams from the right
here. Yes, and it was wrong. Tho it felt good ). Just remove them and take it like
a man. Crippling rights at will isn't the way to go and keep face.

- I have only arrived after the Nick tantrum, but after reading the according threads,
this whole episode looks excessively unprofessional. I won't accuse anybody as
everybody has made mistakes from what I gathered, but this kind of juvenile
bickering is not what ensures trust in the staff. These things are better talked
about in private.

- To me it seems like many of the higher ups have lost any idea what this board is
about: it's about the members. NOT you. Without members, the place dies. And so
does your job. So you better listen what people have to say, and you stop mocking
them for their input.

Mod evaluations, n00b style

Please note that this is in no way personal. Just relying what I saw.

Borgs

Borgs has always been a little hard for me to understand. For example I always thought
that he really hated me whenever I said something when I still owned the place. Which
wasn't so, it's just that his mad people skillz are slightly underdeveloped. He's the
sweetest guy in private conversation, but he comes off as arrogant and uninterested in
other's opinions when in public discourse. Borgs' angry, childish handling of the Nick
incident was telling. This could have been resolved with a few PMs and a healthy,
enlightened discussion about the state of WF instead of 'that thread' in B&M.
Try listening to what people say and try to see their perspective. And for chrissakes stop
tinkering with the board! Bells and whistles won't bring in people, only a cool
atmosphere and hot conversations will.

Elwood

Unfortunately Elwood wasn't active while I was on. RL can be a bitch , but considering
that some people asked for his input on various topics I think he hasn't changed much. RL
allowing, Elwood just might be the better 'face' of the administration while Borgs pulls the
strings

James Tiberius Kirk

I consider JTK as a friend and we had quite some contact in the past. Yet, since the demise
of the portal, he's become more or less useless as a supermod. There is just not enough to
do.

Chris

Same as JTK in terms of usefulness. Chris was a good newshound, but IMHO the board has
far too many higher ups. Chris is IMHO more active than JTK though, and I saw him actually
do things.

The Listkeeper

First: I'm well aware that there's history between Listkeeper and myself. We've been
fighting since the olden days on TBBS and never got along on WF either. While he may just
be the standard warmonger (doesn't matter for the job), he's also got delusions of
omniscience and infallibility and lets us know about it whenever no one asked. I'm sure
he'll have a few niceties for me too. Yet I tried to evaluate the latest member of the WF
staff fairly.

I admit that he was the most visible mod due to the T'Bonz incident so I have more to say
about him than the other mods.

Unfortunately I haven't come to a very favorable conclusion. Listy is power hungry, there
is no doubt about that, and he uses his usual hyper arrogant personality to provoke more
than to calm things down. To let him handle something like the T'Bonz incident without
any experience is like letting a 10 year old drive because he has watched mom and dad for
some time - irresponsible. To give him B&M is the sure way to the members feeling even
more brushed over than they feel by Borgs. Quotes like the ones cited on TK

demotion. They show that he's more interested in himself, the 'power' and spreading his
own opinion than the member base.

Diacanu and Shepherd

While these two are the perfect cast for the Media forum, one may ask: why? I could see
one mod given the traffic of the place if s/he also had another forum, but 2 dedicated
mods are definitely overkill. Other than that: pretty good job by those two. Though they
nd
aren't doing much to enliven this once 2 hottest forum so I really see no point in keeping
them both.

Chuck

Chuck is valuable in Geekforge as he's actively starting threads and inciting interesting
conversation, more so than any other mod does, anywhere. This is more important than
any mad policing skillz. And he's good at it.

Ramen

I know a lot of men who'd want his job - nothing to do but watch porn and getting paid big
time :

But let's be honest. ALL the boys of Wordforge watch teh pr0n. You don't need a mod for
it. If somebody is stupid enough to post child porn, somebody will see it.

Garamet

Well, she's our local celebrity and specialist mod. From what I see, her performance hasn't
changed at all. And that's cool as we agreed that she wouldn't be burdened with all the
administrative stuff almost 2 years ago. Yet & there's no such thing as too much creative
input my dear!

Tamar

Is she still here? I haven't seen her online. Last thing I saw was the big happy publishing of
private info of another member, and that doesn't bode well IMHO. Tamar's continued
absence and annual trollish antics against her own board beg the question - why is she still
a mod?

Spaceturkey

I haven't seen the Weedmaster do much, but I suppose that's the nature of his forum.
There needs to be somebody in the GR, and as I chose him the first time around I guess
he'll not have changed much *pats self on back repeatedly* :

Lanzman & thelurker

Good job by both, tho I have a feeling that Lanzman is more active. Could be wrong of
course as I just can't bring myself to read all the BR threads. Too sunny outside for that

Order2 Chaos

Is still a mod tho his forum doesn't exist any more & draw your own conclusions. And that's
nothing against O2C!

Solutions

Fire at least half the staff. It's nothing personal, but the board simply doesn't need an
army of mods to control Tasvir (and who else makes trouble, really). Scrap the supermod
positions or use them as promotions for those mods who have served the longest, but also
give them specific fora. One mod for 2 non-RR (plus garamet and Chuck as specialists),
one for the GR and two for the RR should really be enough these days. If the going gets
tough (spam attack), there's always ICQ to call the admin on duty. It's the idea behind
having one in Europe and one in the US to get close to 24/7 coverage. Get a tech admin if
you have to, but IMHO Borgs should be capable to do that by now, RL allowing of course.
The vBulletin is really easy to maintain, and with the upcoming version 3.5 it'll be even
easier as there won't be any more source code hacks but comfortable plugins.

As for moderating itself & seems like nothing happens anyway, does it? Not even a lot of
thread moving as I could see. How many warnings were issued in the past months for
example? Not many I guess! As I see it, the mod's main job these days is to defend
themselves against some stupid policy trolling or explaining why no new members join up.
The sheer boringness of A51 is a symptom for that; the only borderline exciting thing in
there in the past weeks was Nick's tantrum. No wonder it hasn't been released: mortality
among the reader would rise sharply due to sheer boredom.

In conclusion I have to say that the mod staff has moved from idea providers to much
bitching about the lack of ideas. I can't point out exactly who and where, but if you guys
want to be leaders, you can't just sit and wait for somebody to provide ideas and then
only criticize them unconstructively. People tend to notice such things as not being
recognized properly for spending their own time to make this a better place. Ideas should
come from the staff like fresh water from the fountain. And you better start listening
rather than brushing off whenever somebody suggest something - and this goes especially
to the administration.

The B&M 'Problem'

B&M is where members and staff clash then and when. It's needed, but it's also a really
great opportunity to troll. So it's not the best forum to put a new mod even if he has been
a member of WF since the beginning. The range in there goes from technical problems to
policy crap, so you'll want to do the smart thing and put your BEST mod in there if you
need one at all

Solution

B&M is where the admins should be mods too. It's falling back on them most of the time
anyway, and they're the ones with the inside knowledge. Usually, a hot case will require
their judgment in the end, and it's better to have them on board allthe time. They can
calm and diffuse and explain what tech glitch pisses people off this time.

It's become slow, but that's why we're here, ain't it. I tested this subjective impression:
Even though more than 15 people were online Sunday night when the French rejected the
EU Constitution, no one even bothered to open a thread on this most important decision.
Everybody was very happy with one of Diacanu's nonsense threads, a Batboy nonsense
thread and a lot of childish and cliqueish bickering about Nick, Listkeeper and if they
should move in together or live in sin or whatever. No one's interested in that & not even
I, and I know all the players. To anybody who gets in freshly this must look appalling. And
the sad thing is: even when I started a pity thread on the decision (designed to be slightly
controversial), it didn't produce much initial reaction. As I type this 2 hours after starting
I'm wondering where it will have sunk in 24 hours
(http://www.wordforge.net/forum/showthread.php?t=19502). A Techman thread on some
female race car driver, completely inappropriate for the Red Room btw, gathered more
reaction (http://www.wordforge.net/forum/showthread.php?t=19504). Doesn't speak for
a board that advertises itself as 'political' & looks more like tits, engines and community
cluster fucks are more interesting than the theme why I was lured there in the first place.

If I had been a real newbie on the look for an interesting community to talk politics, I'd
have moved on by now: nothing to see here, and no one talks to me. Obviously
everything that imaginary friend of mine who showed me the site was exaggerating when
s/he talked about big, hot and even partly intelligent threads on hot topics. You know, I
didn't come for in depth discourse that's as fast as playing chess by mail. I came for
blowing off steam then and when, and the board's post count promised good things when I
signed up.

Caelia, wouldn't she be schizophrenic, would have left the RR rather soon. Not because
she has a 'thin skin' - because no one would listen to what she had to say even tho
everybody wants new members. No one would take her seriously. Her threads sunk
faster than the Titanic, and they were quite typical RR material.

Solutions

The solution to this particular and most important problem is twofold. First of all,
there needs to be more discipline among the current members. Nobody from the outside
is interested in all the nonsense threads that pop up in the Red Room. That's what the GR
is for, and it's good when it's in there. Funny enough - in my few days as a new
member, I would have actually found the Green Room much more interesting. In this
much underappreciated room real community seems to 'happen' as well as interesting
discussion on everyday topics people can identify with. Sure it's slower than RR. But who
cares - almost every answer you get in there makes sense, while the RR seems to have
degenerated into a hack'n'slay fest by people who know exactly what all the others will
say, and all is held together by useless spam and unfunny flames. I wouldn't go there as I
would find it uninteresting these days. And nobody listens anyway.

The other part of getting the RR back to its former glory is of course new blood. To get
that is what another part of this report deals with, but the discipline I was talking about
is a decisive factor in keeping new members. I'm not sure if it's mostly duals or whatever,
but there are a huge number of relatively new 0 post members. I doubt they came for the
porn or the arcade. You can get that elsewhere, faster and better. I'm pretty sure many
came expecting some fun, and what they got was boredom.

The problem with the Right

Of course no one will believe me of all pinko Commies that WF has a serious right wing
slant these days, so bring on the inevitable trolling.
The problem ranges from the juvenile nominal types (Commadaunt, Hutt) to the sharp,
intelligent fascism of Beck and Jeriko. Some find right wing trolling funny because it's
really easy (Storm). In between those extremes you get the 'usual' right. But where's 'the
left'? Or even the moderates? They are & missing. The only ones who somewhat stand
against the flood from the right is Liet - I wonder what will happen when you chased him
away too. There are a few quieter 'lefties' like Borgs and Nick, but they don't really
challenge the majority.

I, as Cass, know that many have literally left. Caelia Praetorius doesn't know that. She
only saw the mocking, the gloating and all the confederate flags. As an Italian she saw
those like everybody who's not a southerner: a highly racist symbol. She doesn't like that.
Nobody does.

Anyway, there can be no more advertising with being politically neutral and giving
everybody the same voice. The right wing clique is trained like a pack of attack dogs to
bite everything that's not in lockstep. The mocking is really doubleplusunnice if you're a
new poster - you got to remember that 'they' don't know how long most peeps have
done that here. To an outsider it looks like a place designed for right wingers to spit on
the few remaining lefties. As you see in the changes in the user structure, that's not only
true for newbies - even posters like Packard seem to have lost any interest to continuously
fight alone and/or be subjected to opinions that are diametrically against their own. It's
not as much a real problem than a psychological one. You stand alone against 'them all'.

I fully understand that the pendulum could have moved in the other direction too - but it
didn't. WF is not a happy place for a left leaning person or even moderates. Unless you
happen to be pretty and sugar sweet like Summerteeth, you'll feel very much unwelcome
very soon.

Solutions

There is again only one solution: diversify. Ask the membership to restrain their attacks
at least on newbies but engage them in actual conversation instead. Like Joker said a long
time ago: trolling and flaming don't work in a vacuum. It's not an end in itself, it's just
a sign that WF does not try to protect people from insulting each other - but the main
idea is to exchange ideas and maybe change a few opinions, not trying to chase away
'the enemy'. Because when 'the enemy' is gone, your own purpose to come back is too.

Another thing: Get rid of those CSA flags that make the board look like a KKK outlet. Do
away with the vilest racist stuff even in the RR. Don't look away when one of the kids
goes on yet another racist spree. Try to recruit more in left wing circles to balance the
power again, and I don't mean hammer here. WF needs less extremism and more thought
put into posts before hitting that SEND button. It's the task of the current membership
to make newbies feel welcome if you want WF to thrive again. Not everybody can be
expected to fit right into this little circle.

The T'Bonz incident

I came just in time to witness the T'Bonz fiasco on the outside (B&M, Grey Room) and the
inside (A51). Unfortunately it's rather telling in which direction WF is headed. I admit that
this direction probably started with my banning of Storm and thus breaking my own rule of
treating everybody the same. Yet the TBF as I will call it from now is an entirely new
dimension of making 'individual contracts' with disagreeable members. Borgs continued
what I started for even lesser reasons by taking away baba's posting ability. How T'Bonz
was treated is the new peak.

You may not have noticed, but letting her actions from TBBS bleed over is exactly the
same thing you are accusing her of! Letting whatever she does on TBBS affect her
privileges here. That's more than hypocritical: its plain stupid and perfect food for every
troublemaker out there. No wonder that TK is very amused, and btw - why doesn't mm's
WF bashing over there have consequences for her? Would be more than fair, after all now
we hold people accountable for what they do and say somewhere else.

Of course we have to come back to Listkeeper as he's inevitably linked to TBF. I don't
know who had the brilliant (not) idea to let him handle this instead of somebody who's got
at least a little people skills - somebody like Elwood, for example. Unfortunately Listy
seems to think that now, as a mod, he can hand out edicts and generally act like he's the
new owner even tho he needs an admin to execute his ideas. Yet he makes it sound like
he's the boss, including the brushing off of every member who points out his powertrip. His
actions - or rather not his actions, his explanations of such - obviously enrage people more
than the action against T'Bonz itself.

I know it sounds like me being on a crusade, but Listy's got to go. He is bad for the site.
And I don't care as I don't post any more so you just have to trust my neutrality on that.

Solutions

Try to keep a more neutral stance. Don't become what you despise. Before you act on
things like TBF, try to step outside of yourself and look at what you're about to do from a
new perspective. You'll be surprised how well this classic creative trick works!

I know its fun to single out people and hang them on the town square, especially if it's
somebody as powerful as T'Bonz. But of course it leads the whole idea of WF ad
absurdum. It's what Asyncritus did to MartoksSweetheart when he was TNZ mod - find
reasons to warn and ultimately ban when there really were none. We didn't like him for
that, and rightfully so.

The Portal

When I arrived, the newest post on the portal page was 4 days old. That's not a good sign
when you're looking for a crazy fast place. And even tho I did find the idea of 'words
forged' quite intriguing at first, the more I think about it the more useless it gets. Really,
what's the point? Is it for short term effect? Then those little articles are too much effort
to write. Is it for posterity? Yet & what will our children and grandchildren do with it? It
won't sneak into common language; I can guarantee you that

When the portal was first installed, it was almost as good a news source as the major world
news sites - only faster, less cluttered, without ads but with the chance to jump into the
RR at once and discuss the news. With JTK it had a virtual posting machine who kept us so
updated so that we wouldn't need another news site if we wanted. The content was highly
dynamic.

Now, interest has waned. The content - CONTENT, THE MOST IMPORTANT REASON TO
VISIT A WEB PAGE IN THE FIRST PLACE - looks static. There's a less than amusing forged
word (sorry PotN, not your best work) with a link to a discussion that's been long dead.
It's been there for more than a week as I type this.

What would you do if you went to a site that looks the same every time you hit it? Where
the links to the forum are hardly visible when you're not very experienced?

Exactly.

You'd leave. Maybe come back a week later, and then kill the bookmark when still nothing
has changed.

Once the portal was there for our members to get an idea what had happened in their
absence. These days, its job has changed: it's got to lure people in who drop by. It must
look lively, exciting, and interesting enough to take a second look. What it should be
(again) is a window to the world of Wordforge.

Solutions

Either scrap it completely or put threads, news, whatever on it. Lose the 'forged words'.
No one's interested in them. The idea itself is fine, but the concept can only work with
regular creative contributions and a community actively supporting it. Right now they
look like a waste product of the forum.

What's very important besides that is to put a HUGE RED BUTTON on the front page that
says either TO THE FORUMS! or REGISTER HERE TO SEE THE FORUMS! As I already said:
even with the top panel it's hard to see when you don't recognize the software. The
forum link in the top row is too small for complete n00bs. Don't make it hard for peeps to
find what they want - the competition is only a mouse click away. People don't care what
they join when they don't know anyone. Try to make them more welcome.

Solutions for getting the board up to speed again

What I'd like to see is a reboot of WF. I'm suggesting nothing less than canceling the failed
place, collect its best parts and start over with a clearer direction. After looking at the
structure, I have come up with this new, tighter one that may help to return some pepper
to the place.

The order of fora is not coincidental btw. (Brackets) say who gets to see it
Guests/Members/Joinable subscription forum. F means this is visible on the Frontpage.

Of course you don't have to go with my Fantasy Latin names. Just make sure they're
somewhat consistent.

Ironic new name for the Red Room. Fora in ancient Rome were places to exchange goods and ideas.

- Opinio (GM, F)
This one is new and unique. It's a place to put up two contestants against each other. Not unlike the BB
game we talked about for months, two highly opinionated posters can apply for a day in this forum (they'll
have to apply together of course, or you can have kinda duel system where one challenges another .
They'll have it all for themselves with everybody else only able to watch but not interfere.
There could also be a voting system to get a 'winner' voted for by the other members at the end of the
day. I'd recommend to not do this at once tho - it would be abused like the rep system. I can see that
flaming costs you points or something - this shouldn't be a gladiator arena but high quality discussion.

The Opinio Forum is only visible when there's people duking it out. An admin will have to make it
disappear when no one uses it.

This subforum is for the rest of the board to comment on the 'duel'. It's the ranks for the
audience.

- Villa & Scientia (GM)
This is the Green Room with a new name. It has been joined with the Geekforge which should boost its
popularity as there's no reason why somebody can't ask a computer related question in there or post the

guarantees that peeking eyes will have to make a little effort instead of just being served with ammo.

Notes on the new structure

Note that the Gray Room is missing entirely. This is for reasons of finally moving away from
TBBS and the constant whining about it (I can imagine that new people get pissed off by
that. Really.)
I don't see why the occasional thread can't be made in the Forum. If there's too many,
you can make a Queritor forum under Watch Up! (queritor means to whine).

Announcements can be posted as Stickies and/or Announcements in forums. After some
time, move it to the Archive. That way you'll have the most interesting forums on top
nd rd
instead on 2 or even 3 place.

I'm also joining the Green Room with Geekforge here. Before you protest - there's not
much difference between those when you think about it. And I think it's better to have
fewer, livelier fora than many that are dead like Butthole, TX on a Sunday afternoon.

I don't think that anybody will miss the Quoteable WF.

The FAQ can be covered by the vB software. No need to clutter the main index with it.

The largest novelty is the Opinio forum. I don't think if the description was clear enough
so I will tell you more about this new feature that would be unique to WF AFAIK. It works
like that:

WF has certain pairings. Shep and Liet come to mind, as do Storm and Cass or Mewa and
Trin. Now the eternal flaming is nothing short of boring (as you can see by the fact that I
even type this. Wouldn't do that if everything was a-OK), so Opinio is there for people to
'go up' against one another mano a mano. It's a great chance to completely pwn whoever
pisses you off to no end, and do it in a civilized manner. Personally I don't think it would
be very wise for your karma to go on a flaming spree in there as this makes you usually
look like a dork who just can't discuss but by insulting. This effect is greatly enhanced
when there's absolutely no interference by anyone, not even a mod (tho one can be
assigned to go in and stir the pot when things get slow). You'd be on your own in Opinio,
and if I had my way, you'd neither be able to post anywhere else on the board nor be
allowed to break off the & well, duel.

Opinio might be a great thing to bring back intelligent, deep conversations back while
being rather controversial.

As to how it works. IMHO there can be two modi how you get in: first, you and your
'opponent' can 'book time. When the time has come, you get a usergroup change so you
can post in there while the rest of the board vanishes for you (including the audience
forum - or not, like in an arena). And then you're on your own to defend you POV against
the other guy &

The other possibility is to enlarge the challenge system WF has already in place so one can
throw a virtual gauntlet at somebody else. Don't do it in anger tho as you will be locked
into Opinio if your competitor agrees - and then you better be prepared as all the fights
are stored & accessible for everybody & forever

To give this whole deal teeth I propose a voting system, but only after there are more
members than just the old crew. Such a voting system would be just as abused by the usual
suspects as the rep system is.

The finer details of the Opinio forum will have to be talked about. Like, how long in
advance can you 'book' the forum? How does announcing the fights work? How long until
people get locked in once a challenge is accepted? What reasons are there to get 'em out
of there? How long are they locked in anyway? Things like that. And I think that such a
competition shouldn't be a daily borefest but a special occasion that gets marketed
internally and externally.

Getting new members. A little brainstorming and nothing more.

I've been blathering a lot, but let's cut to the chase now and attack the main problem the
board has: attracting new members. Please note that I can't and won't do the heavy lifting
for you but can only give you a few things to think about.
Personally I think this requires a marketing mix of various actions, from behaviors (come
th
on, how much fun is it to flame xxxxx for the 10 time this week?) to actual measures.

Let's revisit what was tried already and didn't work:

- Paid advertising. Thanks to Jean Prouvaire we were featured prominently on
Google in the crucial time that lead up to the US elections. People didn't care. We
were listed next to the New York Times for some search topics and it didn't get us
one new member. Thanks for the effort, very appreciated, but useless. If only we
knew before.
- Spamming sprees on TBBS. Just. Cut. The. Umbilical cord. Already. It's been two
years now. If you still hold a grudge, get a doctor. And there are much more
rewarding targets to troll out there. I'd feel stupid if I still clinged to TBBS after all
this time.
- Spamming sprees somewhere else. Stupid. Only gets you banned and ridiculed.
Even the honoured trolls of TK have learned that a long time ago.

Well, let's talk about how big boards become big. Well first of all there's the question of
'topic': the largest boards out there have some common interest for all their members.
TBBS has Trek, there are Anime boards, car boards, you name it. WF has such a common
interest too, and no, it's not that the members are mostly Trekkies. It's the interest in
political discussion. Who has every joined because of the Media Room? Ummm & well.

According to the rules of good advertising, your USP is what sells. The USP being your
Unique Selling Proposition. It's what you have and nobody else. Sometimes the USP is
obvious, but more often, you advertise for some generic product that's exactly the same
as all its competitors. In that case finding the USP requires a lot of research and meetings.
But it's there, always. If it absolutely doesn't want to be found, you goddammit create
one, and it doesn't have to be an actual one. The image of having one is good enough.

Find WFs USP (already done). Emphasize it. Make a claim. A claim is a slogan, a little
sentence that describes you and what you're selling. These can range from simple (Brand
X: The World's Best Ice Cream!) to rather elaborate and cerebral (Brand Y: Just Do It).
They all have one thing in common - they bring you, your product and your philosophy to
the point.

Find such a claim for WF. I won't give suggestions here; this is a cool topic for a
competition. All you need is the short briefing:

- political
- community
- argumentative
- free speech

And no, you don't have to use these exact words. Claim is usually not a job for the
copywriter but the strategy guys.

The claim is part of the logo. They are always used together. On the Internet, the claim
usually also goes into the metatags and windows titles.

Of course a claim alone doesn't magically create a new membership. It's just an indication
what the place is about and eases the choosing process.

Let's get to advertising

Here's the deal: stop doing what you did until now. It just won't work.

What works on the other hand is personal recommendation. There are many 'friends' on
the board who were lured in by somebody and eventually stayed. Here's something: make
this a competition. Who brings in the most people gets something (20 \AC Amazon gift for
example). Rinse, repeat in 6 months. Never underestimate the snowball effect. Sure, many
people are embarrassed to even post on an Internet board, but come on, not really. You
like to show 'em :

Another way to attract members is by infiltrating other boards. DO NOT mistake this for
spamming sprees. Infiltration as I mean it is basically doing guerilla marketing. Let me
explain: instead of invading, say, http://www.genmay.net (pointless board like WF,
14.000.000 posts, ~500 active users concurrently 24/7) and getting banned in under an
hour, a small task force goes there and starts posting. Starts to post coolly. With an
unobtrusive WF link in their sigs, those new members are really fun and intelligent.
Wherever they come from [cue sig], it must be a nice place. Let's check it out!

Of course, such an operation must be planned. Teams must be assigned to various boards
(try to find over moderated ones. Go to big-boards.com), strategy must be talked about
and plans of action must be made. Finally, somebody must be in command of the whole
thing and manage the teams.

Use buzz/viral marketing

Really. It's the trend right now to get somebody else to find your product so cool that
s/he'll sell it for you. This is closely tied to personal recommendations of course, but the
'buzz' can also be carried on by peeps who aren't active here. I won't go into details, but
a viral campaign can yield incredible success if done right - but it has to be planned and
executed according to that plan. It's no use to 'just do it' as this can shoot you in the foot.

If you are interested in such a campaign (it's of course free ), just gimme a holler and we
can talk about it. May WF be the last one I ever make

Email signage

Simple. Sign your private mails with www.wordforge.net

Go for the PR effect. When California voted for its new governor, we almost got the two
young, female candidates to mud fight on WF. Unfortunately I fucked it up back then as
the answer mails went into my spam folder and I never answered before the election. But
things like that are great to make the news.

Such a pairing would be great in the new Opinio forum & and there are many other
interesting pairings out there. If you get lucky and you catch some who'd spar for an hour
or two, be sure to let every online mag from Wired to Slashdot know. Have a pro write PR
about it - a chance for Storm to do something useful for once.

Sounds funny, but competitions are always fun. The writing competition we had in the
beginning triggered a few signups (dunno, did any of them stay?)
You can make a competition out of almost everything. Just be creative - and remember, a
fun prize doesn't have to be expensive. There are special sites out there to announce
whatever you're doing.

Stickers, balloons, sweatshirts. Show your pride in your virtual home with a bumper
sticker! There's been a WF Cafepress shop, but it must be gone by now. There are some
graphics designers on the board who could make a series of cheap WF stuff. Get somebody
who visits E3 or some other fair to give 'em out.

PR2. Use Usenet. Remember that movie, BLAIR WITCH PROJECT? Nothing special you say,
and I fully agree. BUT - the guys behind it did the greatest free ad campaign I have ever
seen. They unleashed the power of the Internet by spreading rumors about the Blair Witch
and how only the remains of a few students investigating it have been found. A little later
they wrote that a camcorder had been found too and the material will be published ...
They were so good that this movie, made for $60.000, made almost 250 million during its
worldwide run. It is in the Top 150 of highest grossing films ever.

I won't recommend you a course of action here. But spreading rumors that somebody
committed suicide because of WF could be a great start & and you could blame the right
for shits, giggles and a lot of lefty signups :

Tag the 'hood! Keep it legal of course!

Bluejacking. Nuff said. Do it nicely and people just might visit. Maybe send them a
ringtone or something :

SMS Campaign

Could be expensive and considered spam, but honestly I'm not really up to speed how this
works. But maybe offer a newsletter with optional cell phone number entry. There must be
a script out there to send free SMS' over some open SMS server.

Newsletter

Most Newsletters are not there to inform you of something - they are made to make you
remember that website/company/whatever. An optionally enabled newsletter with every
signup and monthly follow-ups are a cool way to remind people to drop by again. Just
make sure it's not some stupid crap but entertaining, interesting and written by somebody
who's actually able to write a straight English sentence.

I'm getting a real headache from only thinking about it, but maybe consider some high
quality banner exchange.

In general: the best advertising comes from collaboration. It's not a job for sitting at home
alone - this blocks your brain and jams your creative channels. Here are a few tips that
should help you think out of the box:

- It's not good advertising if you don't think that this is at least a little risky. It's
even better when you're waiting in fear how your audience will react - at least they
DO react! There is nothing more deadly to a product than people going 'meh' about
it and its presentation.

NO RISK NO FUN. There are bigger fish than you in the pond. Let them play it safe.

- Choose your battlefield. This ultimately means to have a USP that discerns you from
all the others. The Internet is huge, much bigger than most people can imagine. To
make a lasting impression, you'll have to be more visible than the millions of sites
that are just like yours.

- All advertising has two main factors: strategic planning and execution. Funny
enough - execution, what we all know to be advertising, is the less important part.
If you fuck up the strategy behind it, no pretty pictures can save your ass. That's
why not everybody with good ideas holds a highly paid agency job & the ideas must
fit the product.

- Concentration. WF can't be everything for everybody. Stop catering to Trek fans -
this isn't the site for them. Try to get in community oriented peeps for the GR and
politically interested ones for the RR. Focus!

- Don't hurry. Rome was not built in a day, WF won't be swamped with new members
in a week. Don't lose patience and don't lose faith - if you all believe in it and work
together to make it work, it just will. Discipline in executing well thought out
plans is key, as is finally leaving behind the old TBBS/TK box we have been in for
so long. That's not WF's target audience any more. I mean, they are welcome of
course, but you should recruit somewhere else.

- You'll have to accept that the times on WF are too desperate to just lean back and
demand that do something. Everybody's gotta help out, and if it's 'only' by great
ideas! And do discuss them in a serious matter. Nobody who gets brushed off will
ever contribute anything again, ever.

Random Ramblings

- Maybe it's time for an optical overhaul. The portal looks somehow like an old house
where no one lives - I can't put my finger on it, but somehow & desperate. Out of
order. Off.

- Try a new default color scheme. I still like Ashlands, but it looks a little too pale to
be really attractive. Maybe make the red a little stringer, but see that you don't
use too extreme colors (white is extreme too, use a light gray as background).
Avoid neon colors at any cost - they hurt most people's eyes. But the resident
graphics designers can help you out there.

- "That's right, Dude. They peed on your fucking rug.

Random Quote I got when entering unregistered. I know it's from THE BIG
LEBOWSKI, but I think people who don't know where it's from might feel a little
strange when they're greeted by the oh-so bad f-word when they look for poitical
discussion. At least don't just attribute it to 'Walter', add where it's from. Goes for
all the quotes.

- There's some annoying glitch that changes certain graphics. Like, icons become
somebody's avatar or something.

nor is it a debate. It is a thread to discuss the 'spirit' of genmay and how that might help you
with fitting in better.
Entertainment, not community. If you get this then all will be well. Unlike [H]'s GM or other
general purpose forums....we are not bound by a commonality of interest, creed or caste. In
fact there is no valid reason that people should be here at all. What is amazing is that there is

a sense of community here, but it is formed around the characters and stories we view on the
forum.
Content is king. Since we are a form of entertainment and not a society, you do not have a
right to be heard UNLESS you earn this privilege. Also, your thread may divert the audience
from better content and thus diminish the appeal of genmay to them. Good content receives
high quality viewership and posts of acknowledgement. It engages the audience and keeps
them tuned in to your channel. Tastes vary so someone may post a Nobel Prize worthy essay
and have it receive derision and someone may just be female and keep people entertained for
days.
Anarchy is not content. While it may entertain in the beginning, scatology and violence will
eventually turn any place into a shit-hole. It is not allowed. Content must be structured. A
thread may become hijacked and become spam, but it should not start off as spam. Once in a
while the management may allow for controlled anarchy in order to appease the more violent.
A star is born every day. You are a star if people know your name and request your content,
support your being, and defend you from persecution. More importantly, you are a star if
your threads entertain or if your being generates revenues from those who love/hate you.
Good or bad only matters in society and community. On G[M] bad can be good if it sells.
Like the WWF.
Entertainment involves politics, business savvy, and creativity. Make the show, sell the seats,
and bask in the glory.
Appeal to the broad demographic. If your thread makes three idiots happy but does not
appeal to the general majority, then you are wasting highly coveted main page space that
could help someone more worthy develop a broad audience. When threads lose broad appeal
they should turn into IRC or AIM conversations.
Drama is the fuel for our souls. Not shennanigans or ....but true drama. Bare your souls,
share your angst, and tell your secrets.
Live > Movie > Audio > Text. This is the law of entertainment....the more real and immediate
and personal it is to all our senses.... the more it engages the audience.
The show must go on. Entertainment changes with the times. Not all the best producers and
directors are given a shot. The studio owners make mistakes....but they watch their audience
statistics very closely and if a decision causes that figure to drop then they will always
reconsider their ways.
ALSO remember that entertainment != art. sometimes it is, but lotsa times people pay to
watch absolute crap. entertainment is what people will pay to see....or in our case....spend
time and bandwidth to view.

Now, genmay is one of the best analogies to WF I have ever seen. Fled the equivalent of
TNZ on another big board in the past (read their history), don't have any particular topic,
and still people are wild for it. I do recommend to send a high level investigation team
there and look how they do things - one spoiler: they take it very easy. And I have yet to
see one discussion about 'rules' or policy there. They are the best example of people
policing themselves. Good threads thrive, crap threads sink, cause finita est. Drama keeps
teh funnay alive. It's got the exact same ingredients as WF so I don't see why WF couldn't
succeed like this.

I found it on www.big-boards.com. Go there and see how you can get on this site. It's a
great advertising tool.

It also isn't much relevant to how the board is run nowadays. It was a bit before my time, but the worst thing I can think to hold over T'Bonz's head is her lackadaisical moderation where the Enterprise forum's equivalent to The Flashlight was given a free pass to troll, and even that was way back ten years ago. But being on this side of the board, too little moderation is preferable to too much.
