I didn’t think we were talking about something as benign as a nickname and as a parent i would like to know about my child’s preference so I’d be able to call him or her that as well

Seems like that's what it's equivalent to at younger ages, since it's not coming with any sort of meaningful changes attached. I had a classmate in grade six that said he was an android, it didn't hurt anyone so no one made a big deal of it.
And presuming you're a good dad, I can't imagine why your kid wouldn't gladly tell you. I just think it's safer for everyone if that choice to disclose is left up to the kid.

The impression I get is that the people demanding this sort of mandatory disclosure are more likely to ship their kids off to conversion camp, or to try beating the pronouns out of them.

When I was 16 I asked out a cute Jehovah's Witness girl in one of my classes. She said she'd think about it, then after a couple days she said no. Fine, whatever. No big deal.

But when I casually told my mother about it, my mother lost her shit. She screamed. She swore. She threatened to disown me and throw me out of the house if I dated a JW, because if I ever dated a JW then surely I'd become a judgmental asshole that opposed blood transfusions, and she'd never let someone like that in her house.

It wasn't until years later, long after I'd moved out, that my mother was allowed to know even the smallest details about my love life again. Because she was a fucking lunatic that couldn't be trusted to respond rationally.

In conclusion, so long as the kids aren't hurting themselves or anyone else, leave parental notifications up to the kids. They know better than the teachers or the MLAs how their parents are going to respond.

Nobody's arguing that parents can't be assholes to their kids -- just that the law shouldn't give them the power to force their kids' teachers to be assholes to them as well.

America industrialized racial slavery, committed genocide, and elected donald trump president. I think Canadia should pick a higher bar.

Left wing folks understand the concept of bigoted parents who want to control their child into being clones of their own shitty worldview. If they've forgotten, go to the school board meeting and listen to them rant.

Everyone knows that CPS exists for a reason. The ones who are sympathetic to "parents have a right to know" are sympathetic to the idea of "Dear God NO! My child CAN'T be trans! I won't have it!!" You can be a liberal otherwise and still have that blind spot.

Understand - the GOOD parents are not being "punished" because the profession of a trans (or gay) identity won't be a source of conflict. When they're told, they work through it. Meanwhile the bad parents maybe have less opportunity to beat the shit out of their disappointment of a child.

If you're that kind of parent, they will tell you first and the school policy will be moot for you.

You act like kids are incapable of picking up on their parents views about LGBT people.

That's where it leads, because anti-trans policies always end up hurting kids that are not even trans.

For example, the new policy in Iowa is that if your child wished to be addressed in ANY manner not consistent with the BC you have to get signed permission from the parents. So if Samantha says "call me Sam" - you can't (as a school employee) until the parents sign off on it.

You may be thinking "well, that's not what us wise and noble Canadians are doing." to which I'd reply "YET."

If you understand Ontario politics, we pretty much always vote for the opposite party to the one who holds power in Ottawa... even if the guy/gal running for premier is a douchebag.

    Harper years, we had McGuinty/Wynne.

    Trudeau years, we have Ford.
