Also this The Urgent Need for Televised Opposition Hearings I went from working for Democrats to spending the past year and a half with The Lincoln Project, a political PAC founded by former Republican campaign strategists. There, I learned some of the hard-line messaging tactics Republicans have used for decades to defeat Democrats. Republican operatives know how to define opponents early, sharply, and relentlessly—exactly what Democrats need to do right now. Congressional Democrats must start holding weekly, televised, primetime hearings—immediately. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer hinted at this possibility in a recent “Dear Colleague” email, but few details have emerged. Witnesses should include civil servants fired by Elon Musk, everyday Americans affected by reckless budget cuts driven by extremist ideology rather than public support, and scholars on authoritarianism who can explain Trumpism in a digestible, historical context. Americans are desperate for this kind of leadership. The hearings would be “unofficial” since Democrats, as the minority party, lack the authority to convene official hearings—but they could function in much the same way: a large, formal congressional room, a dais with representatives, a witness table, a press table, and an audience. I’m not suggesting these hearings serve as a Democratic stunt to score political points or antagonize voters. That would be a colossal mistake. Instead, they must transcend party politics and focus on democracy itself—on representative government, on politicians acting in good faith to serve the people. Democrats are no longer just Democrats; they are the Opposition Party, tasked with preserving a democratic system being gobbled up by an autocrat. The drama does not need to be manufactured—it already exists. Thousands of civil servants have been fired, some in the dead of night, locked out of their computers, and their badges voided. The Opposition Party must invite them to testify. Alongside them should be experts on authoritarianism, who can explain how purging competent, qualified civil servants and replacing them with unqualified loyalists is a textbook move for autocrats restructuring institutions for personal gain. The same applies to Trump’s attacks on the judiciary. He has condemned court rulings he dislikes, labeling judges as “judicial activists.” Meanwhile, J.D. Vance openly urged Trump in 2021 to “Fire every single midlevel bureaucrat, every civil servant in the administrative state, [and] replace them with our people…then when the courts stop you, stand before the country like Andrew Jackson did.” Legal experts should be called to testify on why this is so dangerous.
Oh dear. Text of new Executive Order. "The President and the Attorney General, subject to the President’s supervision and control, shall provide authoritative interpretations of law for the executive branch. The President and the Attorney General’s opinions on questions of law are controlling on all employees in the conduct of their official duties. No employee of the executive branch acting in their official capacity may advance an interpretation of the law as the position of the United States that contravenes the President or the Attorney General’s opinion on a matter of law, including but not limited to the issuance of regulations, guidance, and positions advanced in litigation, unless authorized to do so by the President or in writing by the Attorney General."
For the executive branch. Not the country or other two branches. He wants to be surrounded by toadies. One of the few times he's been honest. It is to stop dissent within agencies but we knew that. And the courts are supporting his executive authority.
You know, I was never a fan of Chevron deference. I thought it took too much power from the courts and juries in particular. I did NOT foresee the alternative being that all the power would be taken by the President and AG. That’s a whole nother level of fucked.
I fucking hate this timeline. 11-year-old took her own life after classmates threatened to call ICE on her family, devastated mother reveals Source: https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/jocelynn-rojo-carranza-texas-suicide-b2700695.html
I'm pretty sure that, in the same shoes as that father, I'd have to be restrained from choking those kids to death.
I can understand why. Intellectually, I'm sure you know those kids have been conditioned to be little bigots by their parents, but emotionally, the idea that children would take pleasure in causing the suffering of someone different than them just eats away at you, it eats away at me too. Our hateful culture is raising Hitler Jugend, and I can only see it getting worse from here if things don't change and soon.
I believe we're going to see more blatant onslaughts against vulnerable groups. I mean, the US tends to do that anyway regardless of administration, but this one seems to have embraced eugenics to the nth degree, and I suspect things will grow even worse for the disabled, the LGBTQ+ community, women, political opponents, and other groups. Here is an article from the NYT from 1986, talking about how Hitler and the Nazis made eugenics a palatable pseudo-scientific option for the masses, people who wouldn't have dared believe a disabled person should be killed became believers in the right and ethical act of doing so. I believe this is where we're heading next, and it will start with stronger work requirements for disabled people until they will be seen as "useless eaters" weighing down society. GERMAN DOCTORS AND THE FINAL SOLUTION Source: https://www.nytimes.com/1986/09/21/magazine/german-doctors-and-the-final-solution.html We're already seeing Elon Musk's cutting of the budget, especially services like Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, and others. How long until he claims they can't balance the budget because of all of the sick people who won't work stealing from the tax payer? It's only a matter of time, because Musk is a eugenicist at heart. A man who grew up in Apartheid South Africa, whose fortune is built upon slave emeralds, and who believes that white people are losing the population race.
Absolutely nothing wrong with that. Who else is supposed to interpret the law for the Executive Branch? This doesn't mean that the other branches will hold the same interpretation. Now, had it claimed to speak for all of government, then there would be a problem.
As Stephen Sondheim said ... Careful the things you say Children will listen Careful the things you do Children will see And learn Whoever's at the top of our government sets a tone, and when that tone is "cruelty is good" ... I still hope that the vast majority of today's kids will turn out to be better human beings than our generation, on average, but that there would be some impact is unsurprising.
Most kid's today are raised with an entitlement mindset, that they're owed something. The ones that aren't have a serious leg up, and rightfully so.
Actually think my first instinct would be to go Punisher on the parents - though in the real world kids can pick this shit up from classmates even when not hearing it at home.
