That was 20 years before he started running for president, at a time when US/Russian relations looked a lot more promising. Why should it matter now?

I'm slowly working my way through the 1999 PBS documentary series New York, done by Ken Burns' brother Ric. And I say "slowly" because Ric isn't as talented as his older brother. :garamet:

In one of the episodes, they interview Trump about something or another. Keep in mind this was twenty years ago (and the interview was likely shot a year or two before that) but Trump doesn't sound like a loon like he does now. His speech pattern today is fucked up compared to back then, like there's something wrong.

I hadn't seen old sound from him in a very long time, but the difference between then and now is striking and undeniable.

Oh, yeah. He still comes across as a New York Asshole (but I repeat myself :bergman:) but he doesn't sound unhinged like he does now.

My theory is that when you run for President, the GOP gives you a shot to make you more susceptible to bullshit. Well, it's either a shot or books written by Jordan Peterson. Same results.

I know someone who met Trump at about that time and he said that he automatically assumed Trump must be drunk because he didn't think that it was humanly possible for a sober person to be so stupid. He later found out that Trump didn't drink, so....

Trumps mistakes and talking style are very similar to people who are ageing. I spend a lot of time talking with the elderly, and he seems to loose track of what he was saying like an older person. It does not all happen at the same age for people, but he is well within that age where talking becomes harder and harder. One of the defense mechanisms for that is to get loud and angry at the people you are talking to. They tend to repeat things, and make up numbers.

Being around yes men would make it harder to judge your own condition. Not that trump wants to judge his condition, but it only makes sense he would rather believe the people who tell him there is nothing wrong and yes him. Some of his bullshit is just human. It is just that you don't really want it in charge.

I'm saying that for most of us we self regulate via external cues and observed norms. Whether we intentionally do it or are even consciously aware we watch and listen to the people around us. We respond to social cues and modify our behaviour accordingly.

If, however, someone is in positions whereby all they get is positive feedback (like Trump) they might lose that context. Whilst others might see signs of deterioration he might well be missing out on the giveaway clues in others' reactions and thus have no idea how out of touch he actually is.

 do you mean he's an amoral piece of shit? Not busting on you (maybe it's some kind of spell check thing) just trying to make sure I'm clear on what you are saying.

it could be old age - it affects people differently. Sometimes mental decline is very linear and other times it hits a tipping point and gets exponentially worse.

True, but it can have more profound effects on someones' personality than merely inhibiting their judgement or cognitive function. Whilst he's always been a shitstain I do wonder if the Trump of twenty years ago would at least have been more competent.

Even still, while I could easily believe George W. Bush to be the stupidest president we've had in our life time, even he knew when to pull back and STFU.

I honestly thought that when we elected Obama (on the heels of Bush who was 54 when elected the first time and Clinton at 46 before him) that the days of electing a retirement age president were over!
2016 rained on my parade obviously. So 2020 might be :damnkids: versus :damnkids: if Warren is the DNC choice.

I get that - but so far Warren is the most likely front runner (IMO) but let's say it is Joe or Bernie - it's still codger versus codger in 2020.
