The article's about 10 years old, but I've never seen it before. Essentially, the reason that pigeons tend to have darker-colored feathers in cities is because they have more melanin in them. Why? Because it binds to heavy metals like lead and this enables them to get rid of it. Which, of course, makes me wonder if something similar doesn't happen with humans. Does the melanin we produce help protect us from lead poisoning? How? If not? Why not?
