I have a question for all of the Americans here. How many of you have health care? Did it come from your employer, the government (medicare/medicaid), private pay, none/don't care, can't afford it, or lost it as a result of losing your job?

Private pay. Having or not having health care has nothing to do with inequalities. The majority of those who don't have it choose not to; the minority who don't have the means to get it are only in that position because they won't get a job or whatever. It's never anybody else's responsibility to provide for your medical needs (or wants, as the case may be).

You'll find that the majority of WFers are covered either fully or partially by their employers.

My, what a good little apparatchik! Do you have that written down, or can you recite it from memory?

Mine is basically fully paid for by the government in a way. My grandfather (who I live with) was an administrator at The University of California San Francisco for 30 years, so he got an extremely nice retirement plan. We have Kaiser Permanente (California people will know what this is) and all we have to do is pay for meds, usually $10 each regardless of the quantity, $15 per doctor visit, and of course extra for emergency room visits or surgery like I had on my jaw. My Jaw surgery probably would have cost well over $50,000, but we got it for $200. A friend of mine has Kaiser as well and she got a surgery that would have cost over $200,000, it cost her family a few thousand dollars.

You cost the taxpayers $49800 for cosmetic surgery?

Health care is neither a right nor a measure of equality.

No, you don't understand how Kaiser works. It's health insurance. Other Kaiser members pay into a huge pot of money that covers the people who receive Kaiser health insurance. It didn't cost you a pretty penny rich boy.

Wasn't cosmetic. If it was, Kaiser wouldn't have done it, nor would I. It's a functional thing.

You don't want to admit that being a sheriff or whatever you were, gave you a nice government paid health care plan.

I'm not saying he didn't earn it, I'm just saying he doesn't want to admit to being happy that he doesn't have to pay for his health care.

I lost mine when I lost my job, and aside from Dual II's incredible lack of knowledge in this area, I cannot get health insurance because of a pre-existing condition.

So where do small business owners and independent contractors fall in this scheme of things? What about employees whose employers refuse to pay for health insurance? (Yah, yah, I know, the latter can "get a better job with an employer who does.")

What about college kids and lunks like Dual II whose parents pay the freight? What have they "earned"?

Thank you! The exact thing I wanted! Somebody who has been fucked by the insurance companies in the ass. Dual, you think it's fair that Axiom doesn't have health insurance? I sure as fuck don't!

That he choses to pay his way has nothing to do with anything except that it is his choice and has the cajones to step up to the pump and get it done.
He also has the ability to do what HE choses, not the government who will be fucking everyone with fines for non compliance. That's fucked up.

    Anyway, your smugness is noted.

I'm one of the ones who has coverage, for now anyway. This bill is going to throw some rocks in the cogs and it's anybodys guess what effects it will have on the machinery of my healthcare.

I've had enough in medical bills in the last two years to pay off my house if I still owed all of it's worth. Had I not I likely wouldn't have the house anymore. I just hope the damage this "cadillac coverage" rapefest that's about to happen won't kill me.

    Oh for fuck's sake.

The government doesn't exist to arbitrate "fair."

Margaret, I'd appreciate it if you'd stop making assumptions about my situation. My parents and I have been estranged since I was a minor, and certainly don't "pay the freight." :)

Sure you can. One of two ways, either pay the price demanded for the service or go to the federal government.

There's a million mexicans and other illegals that get the care they need, no reason you can't as well.

Quit parsing words. His parents don't do it, his family's massive corporation does. It's true, he hasn't really talked to his parents in over a year.

So? I couldn't care less if his parents pay for it, it's paid for. I see he isn't reaching into my pocket to get the job done and that's nothing but a good thing.
All I see is a guy expressing he has his healthcare covered and pays to have it.

I cannot pay the $400+ a month my medications alone require. I am diabetic and have high blood pressure. "Pay the price demanded for the service"? I'm sorry, but I'm not buying a warranty, I'm trying to have the medications I need to stay alive. As for going to the federal government, in what way? I'm neither Mexican nor here illegally, so that's not likely to happen.

No, you smug bitch, you're dead wrong.
Hummus, you don't understand my finances in the least.

Since the day I turned 18, every dollar I've spent has been my own. I've spent it on my own car insurance, health insurance, tuition, food, rent. None of it had an origin connected with my parents by any stretch of the imagination.

I understand the costs involved, and there all kinds of programs out there, some even run by the pharma companies.

Medicare dude, sign up. These conditions would be considered a disability I would think.

They're not considered a disability. I also checked with a few Pharmas about getting medication. Merck was able to help for a few weeks, which I much appreciated. I seem not to be able to continue that program. Same with Eli Lilly and a few other Pharmas.
