Bailey frowns on piracy, which we can't blame him for, he works in the industry and if his company sees profit he keeps a job. At least that is why I think he frowns on piracy.
Generally speaking, I buy my games. Unless it's something I'd never want to buy in the first place, and only want to try out. She is different though. She'll pirate it, play and finish it, then pirate another game. She has all the Nintendo DS ROMS downloading as I type this. One of the very effective ways companies can help curb piracy, IMO, is to offer extras. If I'm thinking of buying a game, and it includes either a soundtrack on CD, or an artbook, I'll buy it for sure. I was in the store last week and thinking of picking up Dawn of Mana for the PS2. If they had a bonus artbook with it, that would've made up my mind for me. But I decided I did not need it right then.
Christ, game producers shouldn't have to shit out an art book or soundtrack CD. The games are hard enough to produce. Besides, it raises the costs for everyone for something that I think the vast majority of people couldn't really care less about. It won't curb piracy, 'cause I really doubt that people who care so little about a game in the first place to not support it by pirating it are going to be swayed by a bunch of sketches of chicks with huge boobs, guys with armor on one shoulder only, and a disc full of generic music.
If you preordered Dawn of Mana it came with the game's soundtrack, so there you go. And Squeenix's music is anything but generic as is their art.
Wow, you're kidding me right? You do know how much most games cost to produce these days. The game could be awesome and still not sell well, because it wasn't promoted enough or was in an obscure genre. But now they have to lure people in with artbooks, etc.? If it's that big of a deal, just wait to buy it used... but pirating games is a big part of the reason the video game industry was heading down the toliet for a while. Man, the dreamcast was awesome, but due to the fact so many people pirated the games for it, it just ended up rotting in the corner. People complain about super copy protection, yet those are usually the first people who usually pirate games/cds/dvds. But I can see where you're coming from... at least you're not pirating them for that reason, I think.
