I've seen a number of posts in threads where a user will post something then delete it. While we staff (at least, I think it's just us staff) can still hit 'show post' after it's been deleted, and while the reasons for deletion (thus far) have been legit, I'm of strong opinion that this is not something non-staff should be able to do, and has been policy on about every board I've posted at. Thoughts?
Just my opinion, but I'm okay with it. Since we can just show post, we can see what they were doing when it was deleted. Plus, it's nice to let a member take care of an accidental double post rather than having to call on someone else to do it.
Yeah, no reason to prevent people doing it, does it display a message to general users that a post was deleted? We let people edit their posts, so this doesn't really let people do anything they already couldn't.
I agree that it seems unusual, but I can't really think of a reason not to allow for it. As John points out, it mostly saves work, and it seems fairly benign. Is there a trolling use that I haven't considered? It is possible to troll with self edits, and I'm okay with that. Does this enable something more nefarious? I suppose we should confirm that the deletions aren't generally visible, but otherwise, seems like a nice feature for the user base.
I think it's a great feature. I wouldn't want to take it away. And if someone is finding a way to use it to troll then we can take care of them. No reason to strip a feature that people are using away just because someone may figure out how to troll with it. We're not the TSA, let's treat people like adults.
We're not the TSA? Well shit, then why did you guys give me these latex gloves and this scanning wand?
