Have you bought in? It feels like all the hype the past couple years has gone into VR. Everyone is getting into it. Valve is releasing the Vive, Facebook is launching the Oculus Rift, Playstation has their somewhere down the line, and even the HoloLens is a thing. Add on to that all the google cardboard and Samsung Gear VR and that's a lot.

How do you think the prices are? 600 for the rift at launch, with extra for the touch? $800 for the Vive, but that comes with the special controllers that Oculus doesn't. 3000 for a HoloLens Dev kit right now, after getting selected to purchase one, but those run independent of another computer.

PC requirements are high for the Oculus. The Vive is slightly lower. Can your computer run it?

Is it all just hype? Or is it the real deal?

Have you bought in yet? I pre-ordered a Rift, shipping in June. I have expendable income right now, a computer that can handle it. I want to be there when it takes off or fails completely.

I've been watching this fail for 20 years. Has the problem always been that it wasn't convincing enough, or was it that VR is just inherently a less than worthwhile experience? The technology seems to finally be there for a believable visual experience. But I suspect it will still be disorienting for most people.

Yeah, the Oculus Dev Kits were still making people sick. They've since increased the resolution significantly though, which makes it easier. When a screen is that close to your face all the time it matters.

Most of the things I've heard about people using VR have been positive. It makes me want to believe that it's finally the real deal.

I think the reason it makes people sick is the mismatch between physical and visual stimuli. That said, I love the idea of it. If it ever gets to the point of feeling natural, not just looking, then it should become huge.

I think it is probably really coming this time. But we have no idea what it is yet. VR is a tool for presenting data. It is not a door to a magical new, virtual world. We have yet to figure out how best to use it to present which kind of data. Whatever VR will become, we will refer to it and think of it much as we think of TV, cinemas, internet videos, etc., rather than "moving photographic images".

A few months back I played this game in VR:

I have to say it was REALLY impressive. A very immersive experience.

Between that and a few others I played, I've come around from being a VR skeptic to a VR...uh...wait-and-see guy.

I've been hearing it's a thing where once you try it you're way more positive about it. I personally can't wait to give it a shot in June when mine comes in.

Another worry about VR is how to develop for it, and how many people will actually be developing for it. The design challenges will be interesting to observe as people battle through them.

3d gaming not bad too. Mom got me a 3d monitor 3dvision kit for christmas. Last year she got me a 970. Birthday she got me a 4 terabyte drive. LOTRO and witcher games look great 3d. LOTro has a little ghosting issues but still looks good.

3D always seemed like a gimmick, and nobody ever really developed for it. VR seems different in that regard.

They just announced 30 games that will be available for the Rift at launch. Nothing really jumped out at me when I looked at the list, but I'll probably try Elite Dangerous and maybe Pinball FX 2.

Also Playstation VR announced pricing. 400 dollars, but you need a camera that's 60, so actually 460. Sony was getting a little sneaky with their 400 dollar line, but it's cheaper than everything else announced so far.
