NC introduced new provisions that basically enable them to operate a secret police. Anyone who works in or WITH local or state government can have documents seized, homes searched without warrant and are subject to gag orders about it.

Oh, and they've repealed a requirement that made documents/advice used to make redistricting decisions public, after they got caught out using secret maps to gerrymander.

But do tell us again FF how Biden is the real fascist.

It wasn't until just yesterday that I found out Mayberry is supposed to be in North Carolina.
Well, those Andy Griffith days of innocence are sure gone.

I can't imagine they'll go unchallenged - no right to legal counsel?! Even the Gitmo detainees got THAT.

It probably isn’t but the basis is public disclosure laws. As usual the Rs are taking something designed to protect the public and weaponizing it to attack their enemies.

(Almost) all communications between government officials and government officials and the public are public information.

Back when I worked for a public agency and needed to be available in emergencies I had a choice between having to carry around two phones OR they could pay me $35/m and I use my phone WITH the caveat that my phone number would be public information AND that my phone could be taken and searched to ensure that when I said I was turning over all records of communications I had on X subject but someone objected saying there were more the agency could verify that I had in fact turned over all records of discussion of X.

I took the $35/m because phones are clunky enough as it is no way in hell am I carrying around two. And I wasn’t doing anything wrong so fine, search my phone.

    At your own risk.

This is how fascists always operate; set up a permission structure to get away with a bad thing, then furiously do the bad thing for as long as possible before the hammer comes down on their stupid little heads.
I always think of the death camp guards who when the Americans were rolling in, could have just run away, but stuck around shooting as many people as possible.
Their addiction to cruelty is even self destructive to themselves, and they just can't fucking help themselves.

I am sure they will be using this sort of thing to crack down on christian organizations who contract with the state to make sure they aren't didling kids or hiding money for criminals orgs like they have been known to do. It won't be like they use it to search to make sure their contractors and employees aren't going to any drag queen bingo events or on any gay dating apps.

Yeah, I am sure this law will be used fairly and not to persecute anyone for their legal hobbies and activities.
