I was interested in the odd mother/daughter conflict between the two. It would have been much better with a morticia that had more presence. Luckily they kept her and the rest of the family out of it and let it be mostly a wednesday story. Fester was the best and most well used, that is aside from thing. I do hope they work on Gomez a bit because there were moments, but they are not necessary.

Overall the story was good. They did not fully break down wednesday into becoming more normal and brought her friends more to accept her prickliness. I was fearing they would take away her toxic independence for an overly emotional friendship is magic moment.

They kept it wonderfully dark with some inserting of color when needed. They did not shy away from the killing. The monster was grusome, and they did do a good job of keeping the mystery going. They laid a nice universe down for a second season.

The actress that did wednesday does a great job with introverted and autistic eye avoidance while also bringing out her confrontational strength when needed. She does a good job of expressing her emotion in the eyes and through subtle facial movements.

I can deal with the morticia problem if they keep the family in the background. Certainly another good addition to Addams Family lore.

Oh and Enid has beaten out Loona from helluva boss for best lycanthrope bitch of the year. I am actually glad they stayed away from vampires here. I appreciated the lycanthrope humor, and using sirens, magic, and the pack instead of vampires. Yes, of course I liked the cute and bubbly furball.

na... but she might have been a better Lilly Munster than Sheree.

I woulda at least auditioned Faruzia Balk, Rose McGowan, and maybe even Uma Thurman (given that we're talking Netflix budgets here)

I've enjoyed all of it except for one thing - the casting of Gomez just feels wrong on several levels.

From what I've seen (not saying this is Nova), a lot of people are upset about the new Gomez not fitting the classic Hollywood definition of fuckable. :async:

There's a lot of people out there that claim to romanticize The Addams Family while consciously ignoring everything other than Wednesday, Morticia, and Raul Julia as Gomez. It's... disappointing.

He looks like the original comic strip, but my base point of reference is John Astin (who, objectively, was arguably wrong for the part) and I can't entirely get past the physical dissimilarity - not even mostly the ethnicity but the short-round physicality (he wasn't so in the flashbacks and those worked better aesthetically for me)

But beyond that: Gomez is clearly Mexican by design - they even reference his ancestors in Mexico long ago.
    But he's named Addams.
And his ancestor 400 years ago has no sign of being latina, and live in NEW ENGLAND not Mexico
    And is named Addams.

No one else related to him except MAYBE Pugsly has any hint of Mexican heritage.

So, if you want to lean into the comic strip accurate look and cast him as Mexican - then make the rest of the family consistent with that. I'm not even sure the original artist was going for a Mexican look as opposed to just a generically creepy look.

And yes I know this is basically a fantasy story that doesn't have to make sense to that level of detail but it stuck out for me.

No offense to the actor, I enjoy his work insofar as I've seen it.

    ETA:
THIS is my baseline, as I assume it is for the big majority of folks who never saw an issue of the New Yorker.

Though I love Raul Julia's Gomez, this Gomez is actually the comic Gomez visually. Isn't the original part of the character supposed to be not the social ideal? However, I found the acting of Guzman to have been very uncomfortable. Was gomez meant to be slobbering and grotesque in his gestures towards Morticia? Maybe that was what it was supposed to be?

I do not know the character of the comic Gomez to say how it was supposed to be. Raul Julia was awesome but may have been way too attractive to be the intent of Gomez.

Three episodes in and I definitely get the Smallville teen drama snark vibe , but I feel Miller and Gough’s writing has improved since then. The jokes are a lot better and thankfully there’s no similar no tights no flights rule in this. Thing has real personality and this is has Christina Ricci’s Wednesday written all over it. It reminds me of Sabrina, but better. So far, so good.

It does not sell out to evil is just good with a dark wardrobe like Sabrina ended up doing. Sabrina ended up not making the dark lord really evil. Evil is evil here.

It does not truly give away any plot points, but it is a spoiler for the end.

Wednesday is fun because she is evil and selfish. You do want to beware around her, and this show keeps to playing her as self interested. It is why, as a comparison to sabrina, this show is much better. I stopped watching Sabrina because at a certain point the dark lord should have cut her down and broke her, or banished her and cut her completely off. Wednesday does not yet sell out on the idea that Wednesday is a toxic person despite her success.

I think most people (at least in the audience) would have Raul Julia as "baseline", not just those of us from literate families. (hey, if you're going to shade me for elitism...). There are historic coloured versions of the comics though, and Gomez is depicted with a darker complexion.

If it were anyone else I'd have more than a few questions about what you believe constitutes the appearance of a "Mexican heritage", still you may wanna check yourself here. Suffice to say I used to work with a Mexican guy with the last name "Schneider" who would've made a convincing Lurch. (Interestingly enough, the entire family cast other than Catherine Zeta Jones in this incarnation are Latinx.).

Also, the characters are never given a last name in the original comics. They were called "The Addams Family" because they were frequent subjects of Charles Addams' comics.

The cast of the two movies was awesome. It would have been so hard to get to that level of good. It is unfair to put the baseline at Raul Julia. He was an astounding actor who made that role his. We have to be able to move beyond that. Raul Julia was latin south american. He just wasn't the short pudgy body type. If you ever saw him in The Plague he was a sinister slick gang leader in brazil IIRC. He fits right in with the south american hispanic image, but Gomez in the comics is more visually what he is in Wednesday.

I personally like my chubby mexican friends who are body type like comic Gomez. But I think the comics went to try to contrast Morticia's gothic beauty with a common and somewhat toadish man. It also went directly against the norm of the man being taller than the woman. In Raul Julia's case that asthetic of the family was not there. The movie addams family were pretty people except for fester.

y'know... those pitch meeting vids were funny the first two times, maybe. how that guy is still getting hits from doing essentially the same thing ("barely an inconvenience" "that's tight")mystifies me.

It's like the screen crush guy always trying to set up a "your mom" except without the actual analysis. (or his stupid dog... the dog is cute, the voice is irritating)

    Blame Hollywood blacklisting Youtubers.
If this guy could have gotten on TV, been a fad, sold some merch in real stores, made his money, and gone away, it would be done.
But these poor people have to do their thing forever until they die.

Yay capitalism? Good lord. He’s a Youtuber. He didn’t have to do this, nobody’s sticking a gun to his head. He can quit at any time and could easily get a real job that’s labor intensive. I certainly don’t see you complaining about Honest Trailers or HE SHE. They chose this and they seem to enjoy it so I don’t know why capitalism is to blame for their lifestyle other than the victimhood culture you live in.

Do people actually buy shit advertised on youtube?

Simon Whistler can't be that coked up, presenting 20 things daily without there being some decent ad revenue. But damn... how does a cereal subscription service make money in the first place?

I don't care that he's making money... just that it's not exactly innovative or particularly good and I'm wondering how he still is?

Sitting through the Roblox kid with the pink hair that screams a lot was better entertainment... or Blipi. The original guy was insane... like Peewee for preschoolers.

I do love pitch meetings, but it is not the only thing Ryan George does. Pitch meetings probably are the most profitable for him, but he has been doing the comedy thing for years in different forms. He does have multiple programs.

As for youtube being repetitive you have never seen TV, the movies, or comic super heroes? There is a reason they call it the formula, and that was around long before youtube and Ryan. Most fans complain when you fuck with the formula.

I do not think it is meant to be high art. Of course, when you base your production on popular hollywood titles it is likely that you will be repetitive and without value. His depiction of the people involved is probably pretty spot on. It is not about quality.
