    Screengrabs below.
These three smileys open up as a drop down every time I click on the reply window, open an edit window, or click the typing field of a start new thread page.

It goes away if I click the smiley icon, but it seems they're the only smileys I'm allowed now, and there's no alternate white smiley tab.

If I click on the white tab thingy, it has a blue highlighted "delete these", (see second image) but that doesn't really do anything.

Is this some symptom of John working on something, or is this someone's random petty fuckery?

I believe John may be starting the process to cull our vast herd of smilies. That may have something to do with it.

    Probably both.

Nah, as shootER says, we are massacring a bunch of smilies, based on usage statistics. Hundreds haven't been used on over six months, if ever. We're deep sixing those, to make the survivors a bit easier to find/use.

I like how we now have several riders at the bottom of the posting window, each saying "Delete" followed by various numbers, probably degrees of deletion. It is such a baroque reminder of mortality, like WF's perfect memento mori.

Delete indeed, sir. And who are we mere mortals to protest? Ours is but to watch and see our old friends disappear, one by one, or in droves.

I really wished there had been an announcement so folks could save the ones they were really attached to (such as flags) but I'm glad the list has been pruned at long last. :techman:

I was given the go ahead, and began culling long unused or rarely used emoticons. At this point I have removed 1,000 of them. There are still hundreds left, so if you want to keep a special emoticon, just in case it doesn't make the final cut, please get it now. I won't be removing any more until the guys say to enact the final killing blow, but that could be any time, so get them now if you want them.

The smilies have been categorized and tabbed. To use them, all you have to do is click the emoticon button in your toolbar. That's in the little bar above the post box. The emoticon button is the one that has the smiley face.

Mine got whacked. :( Hard to see why, considering I've used it three times in the past three months. Did we really not have room to keep all the usernamed smilies?

I have to say I strongly disagree with the deletion of any usernamed smilies, not just my own. Even those for people who don't post here anymore should be kept in remembrance.

I also don't get the logic used in deciding which ones to keep. It clearly had nothing to do with frequency of use. I mean, :meka: ? :polarslam: ? :chris2: ? When's the last time any of those were used?

Well, it was supposed to be frequency of use based. Perhaps something went wrong with the math. Sorry about that. Also, I'm not sure too many people remembered that you once went by that name. Definitely should have kept it. Maybe we can find a copy somewhere -- what did it look like?

I have no idea where to find it again. It was a little blue guy with crazy eyes who was jabbering away and twitching at the corner of his mouth.

I went out of my way to make sure usernamed smilies weren't hit. Some may have been caught up in the culling process. I'll see what I can do about finding your smiley.

    Is it this one?

Some of these will take some effort to find, as they're not named properly. Most of them are just numbers or vague descriptions.

Thanks! Oh, and of course I have a backup just in case something goes wrong. So all 1,167 smilies are on the server, and on my computer as well, just in case.
