ya know, just lay aside the "official" comics for a sec...

wouldn't it be cool if the new character you are thinking of was, say, Gary Mitchell?

Have him as a guest, then spin him and Alice Eve off into their own franchise.

the trick would be casting a person worthy of a role in a tentpole movie AND suitable for a TV series (i.e. not TOO big)

Hell, we'll just say that in this time line Mitchell never got his brain zapped...

    I dunno...
what were they paying the actors on Friends by the end of the series?

How about Charlie Sheen, Matthew Broderick, or even Ashton Kutcher on 2.5 men?

Spin City? Boston Legal? Gods know what else because I don't watch a lot of TV any more....

Those are just off the top of my head, but there've been more than a few financially successful shows that have blown the money for the ideal actors.

Kind of funny-four years ago, most were leary of a new cast. Now the obstacle seems to be keeping that cast together after two outings.

Yes, but sitcoms are different. For one they are pretty cheap to produce. They don't have elaborate, futurist set designs or special effects. Cast salaries is pretty much the only cost escalator.

And they can be influenced by outside events. IIRC, Friends was going to be canceled after the 2001-2002 season but the 9-11 attacks helped get it renewed for more seasons.

Sit coms are different? No shit?

The discussion is about if the actors would be out of reasonable pricing compared to the potential draw of a JJverse series.

The shows you mention aren't really a good comparison because their production costs are much lower than any Trek show would be. Being an FX heavy show adds to the cost of production before you even figure in the actors. A better comparison would be something like Game of Thrones or Mad Men, both shows that have much higher costs than your standard sitcom or TV drama.

Complicating things is that the new movie isn't the box office success Follywood was expecting.
Thanks to how screwy Follywood is, a movie can be considered a flop, despite making a profit, simply because it didn't make as much money as the studio thought it should.

A Trek series with GoT budgets? Hell yeah... that's 6 million per episode, apparently. Pretty sure you can do a lot with that kind of money... including hire the higher end of the writing pool.

Thing is, they weren't big name stars at the beginning of the show. Maybe people remembered David Schiwmmer from "The Wonder Years," but few had heard of the other five.

Amazing what some new blood can do for the franchise.
