Mine was a 45. It was called " seasons in the sun". I don't know why I remember it. It was a long time ago.

The first record I bought was a Star Trek one at a thrift store for $1 about 2 years ago.

Don't remember. Maybe Foreigner "Double Vision" or Styx "Pieces of Eight" or the stones "Some Girls" on 8-track.
The Cars first album on vinyl. Growing up my big sister had a lot of music - the Temptations single "Papa Was A Rolling Stone" stands out for some reason. And The Who album "Tommy."

Born in the U.S.A. or "Weird Al" Yankovic in 3-D. About the same time, not sure which was first.

Pretty sure it was a CD with Khatchaturian's "Sabre Dance", for use as background in a battle scene in my RPG campaign.

Of course, now that I'm all grown up, I've put away childish things. So I ditched the discs and used Google Music on last Saturday's session.

The one right before that (just plain Fleetwood Mac) is great too, with Rhiannon and Say That You Love Me on it.
HA! I was typing fast and almost spelled Fellatewood. But thinking of Stevie Nicks in that context and it makes sense!

The first music I bought was a cassette of Billy Joel's "Glass Houses". In fact I never bought an LP or 45. All the ones I had were gifts which didn't do me much good? Because I didn't get my own turn table until I was 16. It was part of an all in one stereo system. By that point I already had a sizable collection of cassettes.

As a kid, I listened to Top 40 radio, but I wasn't a record buyer.

The first album that really made an impact on me, was Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music, by Ray Charles.
It wasn't just me. Ray Charles had three huge hits from this in 1962.
I had a copy of the album, but I think it was given to me.

In 1964, the "invasion" of The Beatles and the Rolling Stones, changed popular music to some extent.
But it was Sgt. Pepper's that really rocked the world of popular music.
From my perspective, there's never been such a cataclysmic upheaval in the music business.

Before that, there were groups. After that, there were bands.

When I got back from Vietnam, I went down to Telegraph Avenue, in Berkeley, and bought a bunch of albums.
I got Joan Baez, Judy Collins, The Chambers Brothers, and some others.

But FM Rock just didn't do it for me. In 1970, I switched to country music. Merle Haggard is still my hero.

There was great country music in the '70's and '80's. But the music changed.
In 1991, I stopped listening to new country music on the radio.

In my car, I listen to ESPN, the local sports talk station, and some classic country during the breaks.

I want to say the first album/record that I bought my own self with my own money was either Pieces of Eight by Styx or else Xanadu.

I think I have this right, it's been a while, so here is the first for each format, in the sequence of purchase.

First LP: Barry Manilow -- Live (joint purchase with my sister)
First 45: Blondie -- the Tide is High
First Cassette: Billy Idol -- Rebel Yell
First CD: Jethro Tull -- Songs from the Wood

I have never purchased an MP3.

I had Glass Houses on vinyl. My kid has it too, but not my copy, I think he got it from 2nd + Charles. It's vinyl mania up in that joint!

Awesome! My son just got Morrison Hotel on vinyl this weekend. Seriously, I don't think there's a group who put out more consistently good albums (with a unique sound) at the time.
Even songs that weren't "hits" (I hate that word) are really good. The vocals are high in the mix, which I like, and none of the musicians try to tear your head off. One of my favorite bands to this day.

I think it is one of those songs that transcends time. It was originally a French song and then written in English.

Oh, yeah, that's right. I could probably still sing half the songs on that Ace of Base album (The Sign).

I bought the first Madonna album on cassette right before going in the Air Force. Almost a year later I got leave and went home and that tape was still in the player, pushed in. Started the mustang II and turned the knob and the music started. First album I bought that I liked every song.
I also bought the Madonna book. Very naughty.

I honestly don't remember. I know the first one I wore out was a 45 by Eddie Fisher and the second one I wore out was the theme song from Wyatt Earp. Tied with theme song from Davy Crockett. I was only about three at the time, but if the music stopped too soon I woke up and that mademy mom very unhappy because, of course I was unhappy.

been busy with getting a layette outfit crocheted for my new soon to be grandnephew, and crochet a poncho for the big sister. And cards for them as well as for other birthdays that are coming up.
Plus the hospital had a JACHO review and that meant that work was a total bitch.
And I haven't felt the need to post much lately - not interested a lot of the posts (and some of the posters)
