`Time to break off the discussion in the Dr. Suess thread. I broke one of the liberal ten commandments by calling bullshit on the term "white privilege." I don't think it's a thing or even if it is a thing, I don't think it's such a big deal as liberals make it out to be. I believe there is just privilege, both earned and unearned. If your rich or even middle-class you get treated better, in general, than if you're poor. I'd argue it's less about race and more about class. I did come across an article that discusses white privilege and why it's kind of a BS term. Bolded mine. Now bring on the facepalms and tl;dr's. https://nypost.com/2020/07/11/the-fallacy-of-white-privilege-and-how-its-corroding-society/
As I said, white privilege is only one aspect of all of an individuals headwinds/tailwinds. But, if you'd rather it come from the internet ... https://www.colingabler.com/blog/the-tailwind-of-white-privilegeand-what-we-can-do-about-it
Of course there's all kinds of privilege. The white kind just happens to be a really damn big one. That's why we talk about it more.
The way I explain it to people so they understand it is to use the synonym "advantage" in place of privilege. It's better marketing.
Fer cryin' out loud, it's privilEge. Your title is hurting my brain. d ETA: Thank you to whoever corrected the title.
White privilege is definitely a thing but not to the extent some American leftists would want you to believe The best, most recent glaring example of white privilege I can think of is the storming of the Capitol on Jan 6th. A majority white crowd was allowed to breach one of the most important and secure buildings in America After witnessing what happened to Black Lives Matter protests in the summer months before, can you really tell me they would have been treated the same way were it them storming the Capitol? Absolutely not
And yet the article I posted cited examples of certain groups succeeding and exceeding ahead of whites despite the so called advantage.
I was once at a gas station in a tiny little town when a black delivery truck driver stopped in to ask for directions. Nobody was willing to help him (I didn't know my way around the area so I couldn't help either). After he left, the cashier got out a map and looked up where he was trying to go. Sometimes, privilege doesn't mean getting anything extra. It just means getting treated like a human being.
Headwinds. Tailwinds. Multiple. You're pulling out one and acting as if that one means all. It doesn't. Being white is a tailwind for you. Your black counterpart may have a tailwind of family wealth, but that doesn't erase that you have the "being white" tailwind. You both have tailwinds. You both have headwinds. Yours aren't the same as his and his aren't the same as yours.
And sometimes it means a jealous, unhappy individual is looking to explain away their personal failings.
On an individual level, sure. Generalizing, it's a privilege to be able to go anywhere in the country and expect there to be somebody willing to help out with something as simple as finding an address.
Okay, but that's not stopping the truck driver from getting a raise or a promotion and it didn't prevent him from getting the job in the first place or his license. Most likely he just stopped somewhere further down the road or figured it out own his own. Furthermore; nobody is obligated to help you and who's to say those towns people don't treat everyone the same? A true capitalist would sell him the map because the only color that really matters is green.
Privilege for one group doesn't mean that another group doesn't ever have a chance of success. It just means that that the latter group faces more of an uphill battle, generally speaking. There are certainly exceptions, but the general trend is that one group has certain advantages (not all of which are conscious or readily apparent). Just to clarify--do you contend that white privilege has never existed?
If only you were credible or had the ability to make people take you seriously, then you might actually get a decent reply Keep working on it though little fella
When those failings are statistically more prevalent for those of one skin shade than another does your assertion hold?
Wow, you're a true hero. It's not good that you're waffling on your thesis right out of the gate, but at least you're somewhat open-minded. There are countless types of privilege, and different types of privilege effect nearly every aspect of our lives. Your race, your ethnicity, your gender, your physical abilities, your cognitive abilities, your social class, your economic class, your neighborhood, your weight, your age, your attractiveness level, your height, even your date of birth can be things that privilege or disadvantage you in a particular situation. Sometimes those different factors create a barely noticeable disparity, and sometimes the difference is huge. *Date of birth doesn't seem like it'd be a source of privilege, but if you want to make big money playing hockey in the NHL, being born in the first quarter of the year gives you a massive advantage. https://www.nhl.com/news/study-sugg...-of-players-born-earlier-in-the-year/c-657724 Your article sucked, because it attempted to discredit the notion of white privilege by focusing on economic outcomes, when mosr complaints about white privilege that I see tend to focus on the justice system or quality of medical care. No credible person claims that white privilege makes it impossible or illegal for minorities to succeed financially. Nor does white privilege mean that everything is always better in every way for all white people all the time. But there's statistical evidence that shows society in general treats white people better than minorities, and I don't see why someone would work so hard to deny that. Would you make such an effort to deny the existence of privilege for the wealthy, or the thin, or the more attractive, or hockey players born in January? For reference: Non-white patients in hospitals are less likely to receive pain medication, and generally receive less powerful pain medication. https://www.physiciansweekly.com/nonwhite-patients-get-less/ Black men on average receive 20% longer prison sentences than white men for commiting the same crimes. https://www.washingtonpost.com/news...act-same-crime-as-a-white-person-study-finds/
I think it is what I said it was and what @Ten Lubak said in his post that it's not as big of a thing as the left would have you believe. Obviously white privilege existed during times of slavery or Jim Crowe for example, but as it's pointed out in the article I posted in the OP, other privileges exist including other cultural or racial privileges.
You were going great until right about here. Then you did something no intelligent sentient being ever does. You quoted the NY Post. The whole entire purpose of the post is to lie to white people to piss them off about the world around them so they punch other people in the face for no fucking reason. That is their entire business model and it seems to fucking work. You fell for it because you wanted to think this way.
Why does the existence of other types of privilege discount the existence of another type of privilege? And rather than arguing against a strawman, why don't you tell us the extent to which you think white privilege exists? Does it exist today at all? Your main point keeps wavering between "white privilege doesn't exist" and "white privilege isn't that bad," so it's really unclear what you are trying to say.
a lot of the BLM protesters (which were largely white mobs but I digress) didn't even get arrested in some cities. The cops let them pretty much do what they wanted for days, weeks at a time. Some that were arrested weren't jailed (or immediately released) because of COVID concerns.
Cherry picking on the "black guy lost" story. I bet if you were a fly on the wall there isn't one fucking wordforge member who wouldn't help a black guy find his way. Not a single one.
I’m still waiting to see how anyone’s life was improved materially as a result of a white male reckoning with his privilege in public. It’s a middle class white progressive circle jerk. Privilege theory may have truth in the academic abstract, but in practice only serves only to divide people, shut down debate, and cut the fortunes of progressive politics. No white male voter wants to be told that his hard life is privileged. It only fuels the backlash and resentment championed by Trump et al. If you care about substantive policy changes to improve the lives of the materially needy, please drop the privilege baiting.
