X-Wing? Hell yes, I wish I still had all the discs for my old copy... *sigh* First Star Wars game, even before I really knew what Star Wars was. Pretty much my first serious PC game too.
Yes, still have both games on CD... but they don't work under Windows XP. At least I have Rogue Squadron II for my GameCube. Not a pure flight simulator like the other games but it's still hella fun.
I was... obsessed with those games to say the least. Not a living, computerized imperial soul could survive my mad skillz when behind the pizelated cockpit of an a-wing. I always found the tie fighters too weak or too strong to be as fun as the a-wing.
I'd love to see a game like X-Wing Alliance, but updates with fighters and ships from the prequel movies as well.
TIE Fighter was cool. I loved it that even the packaging was done from an Imperial point of view. ("...after the destruction of the Death Star, Lord Vader brought swift justice to the rebels at their base on Hoth...") One cool thing I remembered... The instructions specifically advised that, if you found yourself on a mission flying in formation with Darth Vader, you should not try ordering him around as a wingman ("Cover me!", etc.). I did. Once.
Have 'em all, played 'em all, loved 'em all, and I've modded more content for Alliance than actually came with the original game.
A-wings were definitely the shit in those games, although the Imperial campaigns focused on the TIE Avenger and Defender, both of which were cool, but which I couldn't imagine kamikazing the bridge of a Super Star Destroyer in, somehow (Green Leader rep)...
I loved X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter. Still play it on occasion. After everything, the X-Wing is still my favorite ship, although the B-Wing and TIE Avenger are pretty cool too. I always found the A-Wing too fragile.
Having flown all the ships in those games, I can still say with purity of heart that the X-wing remains my favorite. Best all around mix of speed, defensive capabilites, and firepower.
The point is not to get hit. I liked the Zero in Combat Flight Simulator: Pacific Theater for the same reason. Fast and agile, so try and shoot me if you can!
Well... it was good for multiple strafing runs on a Super Star Destroyer. I managed 3, widthwise, or from the nose to the bridge and back once before it took me out. But on the other hand, two wimpy laser cannons and a half-dozen concussion missiles don't really count for much. OTOH, take out the warhead launcher on an Imperial Star Destroyer, and you can fly inside and destroy it from the inside out. Doable in anything but a B-Wing (although even that may be possible coming in at an angle).
It was 12 missiles, IIRC. Six on each shield generator and a few laser volleys and you'd have taken out the shields of an Imperial Star Destroyer. Then have all your wingmen attack as well and together you'll take the fucker down quite quickly.
Super Star Destroyer, not Imperial. I don't think it was 12 missiles; an X-Wing only carries 8. And I think the wingmen bug out as soon as the SSD appears.
I remember in XvT, Balance of Power (The expansion pack for XvT), you had to destroy an SSD in the SP campaign for the rebels. In the end, the rebels wind up running a corvette into the bridge tower in order to bring the thing down. You just couldn't do it with snubfighters alone, especially not with the limitations on craft in that particular game engine. Also, Larry Holland's X-wing series had some of the best cutscenes ever done in SW games. Very cinematic looking, especially back in the day. I've ripped those to my hard drive individually. Each one is a great little SW flying vignette.
X-Wing carries 6 if we're talking proton torpedoes, only 8 if you take concussion missiles. The A-Wing carries more missiles precisely because they're intended for use in dogfights, but I used them solely against large targets. And I knew you meant SSD not ISD, just pointing out the reliability of the ship. Obviously for a mission where you need to take out multiple cap ships you'd select a bomber like the B-Wing, but the A-Wing, for all it's supposed "fragility" can still accomplish a hell of a lot if used correctly.
Man, there was nothing like getting off a quick-reaction snapshot with a CM or PT that wasn't locked on target, and having it just rocket out and blow that TIE out of my frakkin' sky!! May have to fire this game back up, now...
If there's one game begging for an update to modern graphics and processing speeds other than the original Halo, it's this.
Not sure how it compares, but I always liked the A-wing in Rouge Squadron games (and that weird-ass V-wing from the N64 one, WTF is a v-wing?!) B-wing has always been my favorite it just wasn't very good though.
V-Wings are from the Dark Empire comic books, where Palps is revealed to have survived as a Force spirit and taken over a pre-prepared clone body. He sends new devices called World Devastators to attack key New Republic worlds, one of which is Mon Calamari (Ackbar's planet). The V-Wings are instrumental in fending off the attack. Despite the name, they aren't true starfighters like the X, A, Y or B-Wings - they're speeders, albeit ones that can be dropped from low orbit.
