I'm not understanding the reasoning behind it. To help cut down on clutter?

Seems like your just adding extra work for your admins for the sake of cutting down on spammers and thread necromancers.

We don't mind the extra work. And yes it does cut down on spammers and thread bumpers.

Wouldn't it be simpler to just warn spammers and thread bumpers, instead of answering the same questions over and over? I mean, if there's a PM or Rep War thread, why not let it be bumped for legitimate purposes only, such as bringing up valid issues/questions which weren't considered before?

Closing threads just because they might be necroed in a "rep war" is just stupid. I mean, rep wars are meaningless to begin with, right? Or at least, that's how the argument goes.

My guess is it gives the folks in charge a sense of accomplishment. "That's another problem resolved!" ;)

Not really. I'm here for the porn.

Besides, if I wanted to start a shit storm, I'd be doing it elsewhere.

Yeah. Except it doesn't resolve problems, unless you are a "stick your head in the sand and it will go away" type.

As for the "start another thread" line of thinking, how long before they start banning people for re-starting closed threads on issues that they don't want to address?

Usually two kinds of threads get closed:

Clearly resolved queries. Like T'Bonz's "Where is the Blue Room" thread. Asked, answered, nothing else to say really.

Threads that have devolved into poo slinging..often after an answer has been given.

Ongoing discussions rarely get closed unless they become hopelessly derailed and full of poo.

I don't see this philosophy changing anytime soon. However, we never ban on a first offense for anything besides something incredibly heinous like trying to shut down the board. If you re-started a thread and was told not to do it again and then did it again anyway, you would get a warning, but not a ban...unless you kept it up over and over until you earned a ban.

On #1, I can see your line of thinking. The question is over and done. However, I still don't see the point of closing it. Questions and issues can re-arise, and the thread can be bumped back up to address the issue.

On the "poo" point, nuking a whole thread just because its been bogged down by trolls is letting them win. Punish those responsible for derailing the thread, and let the debate continue. Or, even better, split the derailed part off and transfer it to another place, and let the "poo slinging" continue

The real reason is because of the bats.

    That's right, the bats.

You see there are those amongst us that eat bats. We crave them. And they crave to be eaten. And those bats are our heroes when there is nothing else. You see, it's quite simple.

    The bats.

They don't care for threads about rep wars and fesces or piss poor TK trolls trying to start a discussion.

    The bats.

They don't like it. We like them to be happy. We like to eat them.

    That's why we do it.

    To be full.

    And happy.

And not to die like the rodents or the insects that lack human hair and brain cells.

Mostly the moths though. They are the worst type of feces. They lack souls too. They enjoy the clutter and the helpless held desk threads. They want us to lose. They are our enemies. They revel in our defeat. They hate us for what we are, for what we stand for, for our liberties, and our freedoms.

They can only be defeated by the one that is just, the one that is tall and the one that can fly. They must die!

That is why we do what we do.

    The bats.

    We eat them.

    And we are full.

In all honesty, it'd be hard to justify a warning for either offense sense neither it technically against the rules.

Outside of that, I can only second what Tamar has already said. We generally try to use a pretty light touch and it's worked for 3+ years. My motto is that if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

And if it is important enough the person can either PM a mod or Admin and ask their question or start a new thread.

Frankly, I don't care if a troll feels like it's won or not.

We close them because that is how we choose to do things in here and it works for us. I'm sorry you disagree, but we can't please everyone all the time.
