The argument would be that you are imposing an excessive regulatory obligation on people who are not even engaged in business transactions.

While on the other hand, voting is the exercise of political power which directly impacts everyone else. Though to be fair, I've no problem with requiring people to show ID when purchasing a gun. Of course I've never purchased a gun so how would I know.

Unpopular as it is, even the Republican party isn't only 13% of the population.

But the law doesn't reflect this, and with two major parties, it's difficult to see how this would be due to the Democrats' opposition. Which actually helps narrow down the answer to the question: Republicans support weaker gun regulation than their voters, so they're not doing it for their voters, but for lobbyists who either impact their campaigns directly or manage to distort the issue in the public sphere.

The article refers to private gun sales.
    Is there private voting?

There is only private voting. Though a group of madmen have declared that companies are people, they have yet to demand a vote for each of them.

Yet, oddly, despite everyone wanting it (including most Republicans) the Republican officials are ignoring them. It is almost as if moneyed interests have bought the politicians and they don't care what the people want any more.

Because racist voter suppression and gerrymandering are the only way they can keep their poisonous ideology alive in a democracy.

I think the question is, why should it be easier to buy a gun than to vote? But you knew that, didn't you. ;)

LOL, the Republican Party supports background checks for purchasing a gun.

As to why we want people to show an ID to vote, well, when in a past election I was able to drive past polling stations in Democrat controlled areas of Dallas where they had signs that said: "Lugar Oficial de Votación", but not a single sign in English, it is pretty plain that Democrats are stuffing ballot boxes with votes from non-citizens.

Plus, of course, the Democrats have urged illegal aliens to vote in our elections many times.

When I go to vote, there's a little old lady with a book of names, and she checks my name off.

To get into that book of names, I have to be registered.
To get registered, I had to fill out paperwork.
To get that paperwork, I had to show ID.
To get that ID I had to fill out paperwork.
To get that paperwork, I had to be a citizen.
To prove I'm a citizen, I needed a birth certificate, or a green card.
    I had the former.

So, how are all these non-citizens just walking in?
Where are these polling places without the little old lady with the book?
Did you go inside to see?
No, you admit you just drove by.
So, which is more likely, that you have an implausible paranoia fantasy in your head, or there's a vast conspiracy, but not so vast it can stop Trump?

Here's video of non-citizens walking in and the Democrats manning the polls telling them that they can vote.
