    It's probably requesting disc information so that you can have a pretty pretty picture of the box of what you're watching along with other stuff you don't really need. Stupid, yes. Dangerous, no.

    If you want the experience of not being logged in as an administrator, just don't install anything. Ever. Or try to run just about anything more advanced than a web browser or word processor. In XP, the standard account settings are utterly ridiculous. 2000 is better because they have a power user account setting, but even then, it's not so great.

    Vista, if I recall correctly, fixes this by simply prompting you for an admin password when you don't have the permissions for it.

    Or download it on filesharing networks rather than using websites... better quality stuff anyway.

    I don't have active virus scanning.

    Every few days I run a full system scan overnight.
