well, it appears my mx700/elite combo is of minimal use on my new system as there're no 64-bit versions of the itouch software can anyone recommend a wireless keyboard/mouse combo that *will* work on a 64-bit version of xp?
I'm gonna let someone else handle why Baba's statement is oh-so-silly. Meanwhile, do you need something with ten thousand extra keys and like thirty buttons on the mouse, or are you content with something that is simply comfortable? The former, well, you're not going to get 64bit drivers for, at least not under XP. The latter, and your options are virtually endless.
all i want is a keyboard that can be used securely wirelessly. the only extra keys i'm interested in are maybe volume control and a couple of programmable ones to launch email and web browser, but i hardly consider them mandatory. btw, whats wrong with logitech? my current keyboard/mouse is a logitech setup and has served me quite well in the 32-bit 'verse
Nothing's wrong with Logitech. He was just recommending you a product you already have, and that apparently does not work. However, it looks like the issue is simply that your keyboard is too damn old. Logitech does make 64-bit SetPoint software for it's newer 10,000-key keyboards and mice. There's a tradeoff, though - Logitech's products have a very short support life. However, I'd take a look at Saitek or Microsoft's products as well. Virtually all of them should have some Bluetooth solutions, though even with RF-based solutions, anymore, the keyboard/mouse is tied to the receiver, so nobody can intercept that input anyway.
Bluetooth is kinda crappy for a mouse from my experience. In fact I don't recall having any "short support life" issues with logitech. AFAIK SetPoint supports tons of old mice that they have released... On the other hand my OLD OLD school Microsoft Wireless Intellimouse Explorer 1.0 doesn't even have drivers that work for XP (at least not SP2). My logitech MX1000 is over 3 years old and I still love it. Drivers had some bugs at first with Vista but now they are flawless. They even swapped that stupid "application switch" from XP with the windows flip 3D hotkey, which is great since the keyboard shortcut kinda sucks. Microsoft Habu mouse looks great though... great ergo shape, adjustable side button position, and they teamed with razer to get the "Super-duper-accurate" tracking.
Those should still work with default drivers (altho you will lose some functionality with the extra buttons). My advice is to not get a combo... seems like all the ones I have looked at are lacking in one area or the other. Look for Logitech products that use SETPOINT, not itouch. SetPoint is updated for Vista, XP, in both 32 and 64 bit variants of both. Check out MS keyboards. They are generally ergonomically sound and most of the special keys on them work without the default OS drivers. I'm hard pressed to find a keyboard I like better than my really-fucking-old Microsoft MultiMedia Keyboard 1.0A that I am still using. It was really cheap too. (it's not wireless though).
Depends on the gear used to acquire the signal. There is equipment available that will read BT tech at up to 200 meters.
The only way you can't be monitored by someone determined to watch you electronically is to operate your computers inside a faraday cage. That, or make sure no one can get within 500 meters of your location.
Yes I know... but the odds that anyone cares enough to pick you out as an individual and work on all this are pretty much zilch. Point is for most people, there's no reason to worry. Guess what someone can use a zoom lens camera and record what you are typing as well.
well, if anyones interested i went for a cheapish logitech setpoint one - sold my old PC, and with the cash bought myself a second monitor and a new wireless set-up that works with XP 64 now to get the 8 gig of memory this weekend, and figure out why my side fan sounds like a helicopter taking off when the side panels attached...
its my dev box, so its going to be running virtual web and database servers, including a flex server, whilst i'll have dev and design tools open. 8gig is over-egging the pudding but it'll give me loads of flexibility
What's funny is that in the not-too-distant future, we'll look back on 8 gigs as being so quaint. I still remember when I was really little and my father was talking with someone at an airport about the new PCs he just ordered for his office. They had 8 MEGABYTES of memory and the guy called him a liar... I guess he didn't believe any machines came with that much.
Told ya to stick with MS for the keyboard Also, outside of a HTPC, I don't get the point of a wireless keyboard anyway... PS/2 ftw.
