I agree that there needs to be a good arcade-y starfighter combat sim on the order of X-Wing Alliance or somesuch.
Yeah. I'd love to see another arcade-like flight sim. The X-Wing/Tie Fighter series was by far my favorite Star Wars video game series. The Rogue Squadron type games just don't do anything for me. The space expansion for Star Wars Galaxies was pretty neat, but was really repetitive. It played a lot like Tie Fighter in ship control, but was more sandbox like. There were a number of ships you could use depending on faction and pilot skill level. You could also customize your ship a great deal. The only thing is once you left the starter area, most of the space based missions tended to boil down to killing/escorting mini-missions. Still, it had its moments, like dogfighting X-Wings in an asteroid field.
I like the Rogue Squadron games. But they play more as action games than true flight simulators. I'd like to see a new X-Wing/TIE Fighter series that had the same impressive graphics as the Rogue Squadron games.
Has Beyond the Red Line come out with its final version yet? The demo came out a while back and was pretty good, using the old Freespace engine. You didn't need the disk, though, which was pretty sweet.
another fun aspect of Rogue Squadron was the multitude of unlockable things. you could either save one group or not, and they had secret items all over to update your fighters. the slight freedom in spacecraft was fun to decide what kind of pilot you are. the cheats weren't bad either. the tie-interceptor, millenium falcon, naboo starfighter, and '69 Buick were fun add-ons
Damn Wing Commander! Because of the hours I spent playing those games I have to now invert the Y-axis whenever I play my X-Box.
