the cicadas are annoying, but at least they don't dive-bomb you like the june bugs. i hear them all the time, but they seem to keep their distance. i've never had one land on me.
The only thing that really gets me about insects is how fragile they are. Especially crickets - their legs just seem to fall off at the drop of a hat! But then they're also creepily resilient, in that their bodies and severed parts can remain separately alive for far longer than should be possible.
In Texas, we have some large, red-headed varieties that pack a hell of a punch. They are almost as good as scorpions at getting into the house and where there is one, there are many. They are active, aggressive predators and they absolutely will bite if you try to handle them. I will say this for them: that bright red head gives them a striking, if intimidating, appearance.
I wanna see one of these fuckers fight a camel spider. I had one of those walk across the ceiling of a tent, right over my cot.
I think almost ALL centipedes are highly venomous. It's just that some of them are too small to penetrate human skin. Another advantage to living up in Canada is there are very few bugs that terrorize people here. We get the occasional 1 inch long centipede, and the occasional black widow under a low fence, but nothing like what you guys get.
In high school I took a canoeing/camping trip to Canada for a week. You guys have more mosquitoes and leeches than Louisiana.
That bug is a big bastard. I need to reread some evolutionary biology books to understand why some island critters end up as island dwarfs while others end up as island giants. My guess would be it has something to do with food supply but this would be an interesting subject to read more about.
