I bought my son an XBox 360 and he is trying to set it up to go online.
I am NOT a computer expert and know even less about gaming. Thus, I can't help him.
Anyone have a clue about this?

You need a broadband internet connection and either a wired or wireless router. If you go wireless, you have to purchase the ridiculously expensive wireless adapter for the XBox. Otherwise, simply plug the Xbox into your router via a standard network cable. There should then be adequate online instructions to find your broadband provider and go from there.

It should just run once you put the network cable in (RJ45)

    What mine did anyway.

Please see diagram. WE tried plugging in the x-box only but it had some error message about "IP address failed" or something.

You need a new device called a router in order to hook up both the PC and the XBox at the same time. It basically splits out the connection so that both can use it.

They should generally run no greater than $50 for consumer models, which is all you really need. Depending on which router you get, you'll probably need to clone the MAC address of your computer onto the router so that the modem (being a Comcast pile of crap) will use it, but that's a bridge to cross in the future.

Look around at routers, and once you come up with a few, we'd be happy to tell you which ones are good and which ones aren't (but don't listen to any BRAND X IS BETTER THAN BRAND Y crap, because at the consumer level, it truly doesn't matter).

Thanks everyone...I figured out what the problem was. I needed to unplug my PC from the modem, turn off (remove power from) the modem for a minute to "clear" it. Then we turned it back on, plugged in the x-box and it worked. Of course, clear it again before using the PC.
Yes, we figured out we need a router to run both at once. I can get one free from old stuff we get rid of at work.
