Yeah, but how much do they cost to produce?

Cost is irrelevant! A battery that let's me surf and tweet continuously for 24 hours is worth any expense, any burden! Well, no, but more to the point, whatever the cost, it will ultimately come down to a reasonable consumer price point.

Carbon continues to demonstrate that it is seriously ridiculous stuff.

As to how much it would cost -- it needs another .9% to be commercially viable, so maybe the scientists didn't bother estimating production costs.

I could stand to throw a pure Lithium battery in the ELF.3 to 4 times the range, plus solar charging. Hell to the yes.

And fusion power, which will be "too cheap to meter" has been "just around the corner" for the past 50 years.

Don't worry, within the next 6 months we'll all be able to 3D print our own fusion reactors. ;)

Well, unlike the fusion efforts, there's been a lot progress on 3D printing. There's been a lot of impressive anouncements about battery development, but none of it seems to ever hit the market.

This will make solar-electric ever-flying airplanes practical.

The trick isn't building a plane that can fly using only the sun's energy. The trick is one that during the day flies and charges batteries with enough energy to keep it aloft through the night.

Solar Impulse have a plane that can just about do it, using existing battery technology.

But with 3x - 4x the energy storage? Wheeee I think heavier-than-air indefinitely-aloft platforms just became practical.
