Green Room thread because how could anybody gripe about this? I mean how cool is this? I saw this on CBS news a few minutes ago - the recruiting video is TOO AWESOME but not on youtube sadly. Hey, obviously if they are willing to accept a job with a 96 PERCENT ANNUAL TURNOVER they are no fucking doubt filling the jobs nobody wants!

I guess those old-school trucker classics like "Six Days On The Road" "East Bound And Down" "Teddy Bear" and "Convoy" can be retired now!

Talked to an uber driver not too long ago who did a stint as a trucker. Part of the problem (on top of the other problems with the industry) are that electronic transponders have made it possible for companies (and the Feds) to actually monitor how long a truck has been moving, enabling them to enforce the drive-time limits that were enacted into law. Since most truckers are paid by the mile, the technology and the law have severely curtailed their ability to make money. So truckers have to work a crazy number of days per month to get their 'miles' in, which results in almost no home life at all. Hence the high turnover rate. IMO this is another one of those gigs that's going to go fully robotic as soon as the technology supports it. It's not coming in the immediate future, but it's coming.

I can hardly imagine a more bad for your health job, unless it's a rodeo clown or something. You are sitting on your ass cutting off your circulation, you are sedentary, you have irregular meals & sleep patterns, etc. etc. :( You are at the mercy of the weather (which as we know in most parts of the US means total and utter chaos & unpredictability) and fuel prices too at times. Shitty drivers to deal with....terrible job.

Kind of like being a commercial pilot. Except for the shitty drivers part.

Yeah I wouldn't want to be a commercial pilot just because of the "responsible for other people's lives" bit. :shep:
Hell being an air-traffic-controller involves an insane amount of stress especially in the civilian world. :shep: Even in the military I saw what controllers go through whenever there is a crash - they get put under that microscope with a QUICKNESS! :soma: Then they come looking for me....... but rarely is air traffic control equipment to blame because there is built in redundancy in communications, navigation, etc. And air traffic controllers at smaller airports generally don't make shit either! Maintenance (my job) make a lot more money with a fraction of the stress or responsibility, plus you can do maintenance well into your sixties and even beyond. But I wouldn't want an elderly air traffic controller behind the mic/in front of the screen because your brain better be firing fast and accurately!
