We all know that Darth Vader never actually said "Luke, I am your father" and Kirk never said "Beam me up, Scotty." It's called the Mandela effect (after people swearing that they remember Nelson Mandela dying in prison, which he actually didn't). But those are both plausible rearrangements of things that were actually said. A New Hope is on TNT right now, and I just realized that I have always remembered Leia's first line as: "Darth Vader. Only you could be so bold ... or so stupid." But she never says the last three words ... not in the current version, not in the original, not even in the radio drama. And I can't think of anywhere else in the trilogy that I would have summoned the memory of Carrie Fisher saying those words from. It seems to be a complete random fiction that my brain came up with out of nowhere. Are there any movie lines that you consistently remember wrong, for no apparent reason?
I don't know about me personally, but "beam me up Scotty" and "do you feel lucky punk?" are two that are often misquoted. I believe also that "play it again Sam" was never said.
I have watched movies I didn't really like that much several times with no distractions, paying attention to every single second of the movie, just because I was in denial that I remembered something incorrectly. I would watch different versions too, like director's cuts, extended versions, alternate endings, etc. if possible just to convince myself that I wasn't
The "beam me up Scotty" has been trotted out for years but although that EXACT word sequence was never said onscreen, several times Kirk used those words out of sequence or the equivalent.
There was a pretty funny episode of The X Files that was about the Mandela effect last season. Turns out the guy was crazy and escaped from a mental institution, or was he?
Ever heard that when they started filming the director didn't think the relationship between Jaws and the little blond woman was believable until Richard Kiel (Jaws) pointed out the actress was the same height as his wife?
Weird! Two of those got me. I could have sworn he said hello clarice in silence of the lambs and I thought #17 was from a few good men.
Right? The scene where they meet. They lock eyes. She smiles and appropriately enough she has braces. They’re perfect for each other! Except no braces. Dropped the ball on that one EON.
agree on "hello Clarice" too. Amazing how human memory works! This is why interviewing elderly people about UFO encounters is a lost cause IMO.
Some of the differences in those "misquotes" are so minor that I have to think the author has giant pole stuck up his arse.
