Nice idea, but I am going to be hesitant to knock my shit on the floor. If I do not have the time to get the machete from the closet, or the other fatal objects in the room, I am not going to have time to take everything off the table, pull it apart, and equip the shield and bat. If you are that worried just hang the shield over the headboard, and leave the bat next to your bed.
There's a potentially fatal flaw to that design, from what I understand, as well as one definite one. The potential one is that there's no padding on the backside of the shield, and there's a definite raised section. Might be kinda painful if you take some hard blows to the shield. The definite one is the metal brackets you put your arm through to hold the shield. If there's two attackers, and one of them manages to grab your arm holding the bat, while the other starts yanking on your arm with the shield, the guy yanking on the shield can put you in some pain because of those metal brackets. I have been told by a guy who's pretty heavily into recreating medieval armor that you need a set up like this for the backside of your shield if you really want to be comfortable in combat.
Or just go the WoW route and have the shield hover 6" in front of the shield arm. On second thought, never mind. One needs to steal human milk to pull it off. Fuck Blizzard
There's a big difference between practice/exhibition fighting and "trying to not get killed" fighting. A night stand that converts into self-defense tools is probably meant for the latter category. With exhibition and practice, endurance is important, as is avoiding anything beyond superficial injuries. The padded strappy shield is best for that because it can take several solid hits without causing the wearer discomfort. But, how long does it take to properly secure that shield? Maybe a minute or so in ideal circumstances? If a meth head breaks into your house in the middle of the night, do you have time to fumble in the dark with padding and straps? The metal brackets allow the shield to be equipped quickly. Also, the point of "trying not to get killed" fighting is to avoid being killed; non-lethal injuries are acceptable. A meth head isn't going to be pounding on it for hours at a time. They might get one or two good hits before they're subdued with the club because I doubt a meth head would think to bring their own shield. Hell, even if the shield was secured to the arm with lemon juice and bee venom-coated barbed wire it's still probably better than getting stabbed. Obviously, neither shield will stop a bullet, but a meth head wouldn't have a gun anyway. If a meth head owned a gun they would have traded it for meth long before resorting to breaking into the house of the sort of person who would buy a shield-and-club nightstand.
