Zimbabwe’s Military, in Apparent Takeover, Says It Has Custody of Mugabe
By JEFFREY MOYO and NORIMITSU ONISHINOV. 14, 2017

HARARE, Zimbabwe — Zimbabwe’s military said early Wednesday that it had taken custody of President Robert Mugabe, the world’s oldest head of state and one of Africa’s longest-serving leaders, in what increasingly appeared to be a military takeover in the southern African nation.

After apparently seizing the state broadcaster, ZBC, two uniformed officers said in a short predawn announcement that “the situation in our country has moved to another level.” While denying that the military had seized power, they said that Mr. Mugabe and his family “are safe and sound, and their security is guaranteed.”

“We are only targeting criminals around him who are committing crimes that are causing social and economic suffering in the country in order to bring them to justice,” said the main speaker, who was identified as Maj. Gen. S. B. Moyo, the army’s chief of staff.

I truly hope that this leads to better things. Given the track record of militaries that stage a coup however it's more likely an exchange of one group of scum for another.

Not sure where I heard it this morning but word is that Mugabe is essentially under arrest. If he continues it will be as a figurehead.

He's fucking 95 years old anyway. Why the fuck would he bother?

From what I can gather, this is essentially a coup not against Mugabe himself, but his wife, who last week was appointed vice-president and successor. The military remains loyal to the former vice-president.

    My exact thought.

However, this doesn't sound like it's going to change much.

Well more information is coming out.

Mugabe is 95 years old. So everyone realizes his time is very close to being up. His 52 year old wife has been maneuvering herself and her people to take over when Mugabe kicks the bucket.

The Vice-President Emmerson Mnangagwa was fired last week and fled the country. He has the backing of the military. It's also been reported that he's returned to the country.

It looks like the country may be heading to a civil war since Mugabe's wife seems to have a large enough following that they won't go without a fight.

Apparently also the Chinese have a keen interest and may be tacitly supporting this action...

Mugabe himself has always used political violence and even uses food as a weapon denying it to anyone who did not unconditionally support him in anything and everything.

I expect that the thugs are going to fight is a foregone conclusion.

Depends. We'll see if they're so eager to fight against targets who can fight back and have superior firepower.

Mnangagwa must have known this would be necessary at some point. These plans had to have been in place for a while now, for everything to go so smoothly. Seems Gucci Grace seriously underestimated her competition.

And most of those leaders came before the continent was infected with Christianity. Africa used to have many more prominent civilizations before Europe systematically dismantled them.
