It seems like a good possibility.

However, this case has a history of bringing up suspects who seem like good fits to the killer, but who are later ruled out. For example, the evidence against Arthur Leigh Allen (subject of the book and film Zodiac) seems incredibly solid, but there is evidence (DNA, handwriting, a witness sighting of the Zodiac, etc.) that excludes him.

I'm astonished that more attention wasn't called to the facial scars from the outset. I would think that would've popped Poste up as a suspect very quickly.

The media hasn't provided the details on the cryptographic evidence the Case Breakers came up with. That might be incredibly strong evidence.

IIRC, the author was either contracted by, or initiated the writing the book directly with Allen and despite all circumstantial evidence pointing to Allen as the killer, Allen continued to deny it. However, the author was left with the feeling Allen was the killer. I don’t believe the police Allen worked with gave the author all evidence they had. But, then, … it’s been 30+ years since I read the book.
