Could you take a population of black people today, and run a eugenics program on them, and make white people using nothing other than selective breeding?

Sure, there might be mutation every once in a while, one in every billion black couples might pop out a white kid just randomly, but it would be a drop in the ocean. What kind of factors could have selected in favor of a whole race of millions of white people emerging?

In a lower-sunlight environment, you need less melanin in order to get the same UV rays for proper Vitamin D production. Lifespans of black people in northern Europe were likely right around childbearing age until they started giving birth to white people who more consistently survived to childbearing age.

Blacks have been living in northern latitudes for 3 - 4 centuries, first as slaves, later as migrants. For most of this time, all the fancy vitamin supplements we have today did not exist.

E.g. in the mid-1800s if you were a slave in America the place to escape to was Canada. And thousands of slaves did escape thence via the underground railroad. But you don't hear of them getting rickets or their kids getting rickets... IOW maybe vitamin D wasn't the real culprit for the emergence of whitey.

Of course, scientific and technological advancement has negated the need for natural human evolution.

How do white people survive in the tropics? Sunscreen, protective clothing, shelter, etc. How do blacks retain Vitamin D in colder climates? Food pumped with nutrients, multivitamin tablets, etc.

Wasn't there a super volcanic eruption around 75,000 to 80,000 years ago that pared the human population down to about 5,000 individuals? That might account for the change. A supervolcanic eruption would have blocked out most of the sun for years.
