    Um...sorry but no?

The main reason my father decided to leave fascist Spain was because he had to serve a mandatory two years in the military.

Fascist Spain, I might add again.

So it wasn't the murdering of thousands of citizens, the repression of minorities, and the establishment of a police state that forced him out, but two years of service?

    No actual rebuttal?

No attempt to justify how your idea is different than Franco's?

No explanation for how your idea ISN'T a violation of the 14th amendment?

Come on, Tex, throw out SOMEthing for meaningful discussion.

Wow. Worst tax hike idea ever. And if you don't see that as a form of extreme taxation, then you're just not looking closely enough.

While you were off mowing lawns, or whatever it is you do now, we(Wordforge) had this discussion in a totally different thread. If you'd like to discuss it then seach and bump the thread or start a new one, I'm not gonna sidetrack this one any more.

Interstates Vs. Mandatory military service for citizenship.

You can't REALLY be making that comparison, right?

Rampant federal land confiscation, eminent domain abuses, and government support of the pollutiong of the internal combustion engine Vs. Mandatory military service for citizenship.

    There's your comparison.

This must be a European mindset. Since the government is supposed to take care of this, the people shouldn't assist in any way, shape or form. The neighbor that just got laid off from his job? What are you bringing them over that nice casserole for his family...they're getting an unemployment check, aren't they?

On a grander scale, I think New Orleans would fit in much better on the European continent, while a city like Grand Forks is so much more...American. When it was in danger, the people didn't wait for the army to come and build their dikes...they rolled up their sleeves and built them from scratch...from filling bags of sand to stacking them up...one residence at a time, the community as a whole. And by community I don't mean the local government...the people themselves. Nobody was asking where the government was, or why they weren't helping them...it didn't even cross their mind. They were far too busy with the manual labor of self responsibility and self determination, and otherwise taking charge of their own fates.

Well, since we were/are discussing providing for the soldier, it looks like we hijacked his thread and actually made a relevant on topic discussion out of it.

    Ahh, there we go.

And you raise a good point. The creation of the interstate did result in a great deal of abuse. Though Federal land confiscation and eminent domain abuses are, I think, the same thing.

I'm not sure, though, what you mean by "polluting the internal combustion engine", though.

Heh, meaning that the interstate highway system led to more use of the internal combustion engine, and less demand for alternatives. All by the very same government that subsidizes Amtrack, wishes they could herd us into mass transit, and props up inefficient ethanol production.

Was anyone really considering fuel alternatives back then, though?

While I disagree with what had to happen to get the Interstate system, I've come to love it as it makes transit so much easier than it once was, especially economically.

How many, though, had their lands seized without wanting to sell? Is there any record of that?

It consumes over 1.6 million acres, I'm sure all of those were willing sellers. :bergman:

But hey, that's no worse than two years of mandatory military service, now is it?

1.6 million acres, much of it in the middle of nowhere...I mean, who lost their land when they built the Florida Turnpike? Alligators?

    Some were unwilling, sure.

But comparing it to mandatory military service for citizenship? The difference is, such service is expressly outlawed by the 14th amendment. Born here? Citizen. Done deal.

besides, why would we want a military service populated by people who don't want to be there? That's the main argument military leaders have against the draft. What good does having a soldier do you if his heart isn't really into it?

Another good thing about Grand Forks is that the job of mayor is a part time position. The current mayor, Michael Brown, also continues to practice medicine as an ObGyn at Altru.

    Small government :techman:

Alright fuck it, if we're gonna talk about it here, lets do it.

I'm actually in support of 1.5 years mandatory military service or 2 years of social service in exchange for voting rights. The clock on your service time doesn't start until you're trained to do your job, whatever it may be. The social service jobs are based on test scores and the needs of the government. So if they need someone to build roads, you may end up doing construction.

The budget for this plan is paid for by cutting different other various military and government budgets(recruiting, mass transit, and pork pork pork).

I feel like people should have to earn there way if they want a say. In fact, that's my slogan for now. Earn your way if you want a say. Voters would be people who actually care to vote, and everyone would have to chip in to keep making this country great.

When people lose their job, they deserve to starve. We should kick them in the face when they lie in the gutter :borg: [/Internet libertarian]

But of course all the pseudo-libertarianism is all forgotten when it's about the holy military, the supercool government invading foreign countries and generally acting asshole-ish - as long as it happens to somebody else.

    yeah, alligators are people.

You have no record of anyone who lost their land unwillingly. At least, none you've shared. No evidence that anyone was clamoring in protest. If you do, please, share.

How is this not a violation of the 14th amendment?

So, no more subway in New York?

Why? Is that contrary to what the basis of the country is?

Since when are voters not people who actually care to vote?

    Am I?

I'm sorry, but if someone claims something happens, I need more than just their word to believe it in full.

I'm willing to believe it probably happened SOMEwhere, but it's rather hard to discuss without specifics, now isn't it?
