There is a new Applebee's near me so I took my girlfriend for dinner. Whoo boy!! I can't get enough of those kid waiters and waitresses. They provide great entertainment. OK, so we order our meals and I order a steak, medium rare. I got it medium RAW. I had to wait forever for the friggin' waiter to walk by. That was after I told another waiter to go get him. They have some fancy drinks so I order a Strawberry Mojito. I get a regular one. Again its just dump and run by the waiter. When I catch him I say please bring me the correct drinK. My steak comes back and its now OK. But the Mojito's are weak. The only saving grace was that they were $6 each. Rather low in my book. Now the steak was good but I don't really care for those mashed potatoes with the skin in it. The salad was rather small. To many people with their bad, loud mouthed kids. And I don't like how long they take to serve the drinks. I was watching the bar and it was empty but still had to wait forever. I told the waiter that I was real thirsty and to please get the drinks to us quick. Of course the salad came before the drinks. That mug did not know how to earn a good tip. OH well. Flashlight woulda loved it but I don;t know if they give free soda refills.
Huh? Please explain. I never said that I never go to these places. I've taken my daughter and her friends to Chili's, Red Lobster, TGIFridays, etc. I don't go to them as special nights out.
Oh well. Whatever you say. I like to check both sides of an arguement. Just like how I watched all 9 eps of Firefly and the movie.
Probably because when you work at one of those places, they make you wait for the bartender to get your drink. Evidently the lowly waiters can't be trusted around alcohol. I can't even tell you how many times I had to go get the bartender from his smoke break to come pour me a fucking beer to serve. Ridiculous, IMHO!
Applebee's sucks. At least the one next door to where I work does. Unos is much better. Hell, even Red Robin is better than Applebee's.
Nothing. Just apostle trying to make his bones again. He's still having some difficulty figuring out how to make a name for himself here.
Mewa, was it the Applebees in Clifton Commons? Or is that too far from ya? If so you were, like, 100 yards from me.
I don't get why so many restaurants nowadays are not bothering to skin their mashed potatoes. I've heard it's For Texture! but the point of mashed potatoes is that they're supposed to be creamy. You're not supposed to get crap stuck in your teeth. It's like on the Food channel where the chef has whipped up what promises to be a delicate, moist, soft cake, then ruins it by tossing in teeth-shattering nuts or fossilized fruit. For Texture! Why can't chefs understand that creaminess is a texture?
Creamy potatoes are whipped potatoes. The grainier, mushed ones are mashed potatoes. I prefer whipped myself...my Mom does it with butter and cheese and it is heavenly, if fattening.
There do seem to be two schools of thought on the subject. I've always wondered who thought of turning them into an appetizer.
You'd better be careful eating it though. I too love to eat the outside of a baked tater. However, I was once eating at this fairly nice place in Chicago and something just didn't seem right as I was eating the skin. I asked the waiter what they used to wash the outside of the tater before baking and he looked at me like I had suddenly grown another head. He said, "Wash the potato? Why on earth would we do that? "
Only if they're done right. An hour at 400° is fine for cooking the inside of the potato to edible softness, but the skins really need about 80-90 minutes at 450° in my experience. The interior of the potato can withstand a little overcooking just fine, but skins that aren't firm and at least a little bit crisp are just a waste.
Funny thing is Mewa, I haven't been to Applebee's in a long time, and the last couple of times I have been there, I didn't like what I got. The food was not prepared well. Frankly, I have no desire to go back anytime soon. Actually, I wasn't particularly impressed with TGI Friday's either the last time I went there. Chili's is probably the best of these type of restaurants. Chedder's is good. Red Robin is good, but ridiculously overpriced. Good onion rings however. Of course, I'm hardly surprised you didn't enjoy the experience, given your prejudices.
