Sword is no good unless you've got the skill to use it. Remember you've got to break through the skull.

If you're going to use a blade use this:

A long handle axe. Gives you the ability to swing it hard and it is multi use. When not breaking heads open it can chop fire wood.

You only have to break through the skull if you're trying to kill it once and for all. A decapitated zombie, while still able to work its jaw, isn't much of a threat.

That said, I don't believe I'd be putting my fate in the hands of a sharpened replica/prop sword. Those things just are not designed for long-term, heavy-duty use.

Who said anything about a replica/prop? I'm talking about the real thing.

I went to the local Renaissance Faire last year where they had the sword smith shop. That guy made some high-quality blades that were perfectly balanced and light as a feather, yet would cleave through your skull like butter.

I had to stifle my laughter when I saw he was missing more than a couple of fingers, too.

Axes and swords, like trucks, should not look pretty. They're a tool, not an accessory.

No one is talking about looking pretty.

I'd still go with the axe though.

I have short arms. I'd have to go with some sort of throwing weapon.

The problem with the axe you get at your typical hardware store is that it's designed like a wood-chopping tool, rather than a melee weapon. You'd have to catch a zombie just right to pull off a full decapitation. Needs a broader head to make it easier. Sure, you can just bury it in the skull, but then your axe is stuck in a zombie's skull, whereas with a proper greataxe you could just swing left to right and keep mowing through them until your arms got tired.

The odds of anyone doing successful decapitations back to back is slim. The neck is a small moving target and you have to hit it hard. Anything less doesn't result in decapitation.

I'm not looking for all out combat against hundreds of Zombies. The axe would be used for the one or two that show up. You start getting greater numbers then that it's time to use the gun or to run.

I dunno...a gun shop, a police station, a military base!?!?

More and more, bow & arrow seems optimal, at least for long-distance zombie hunting, if they're drawn by sound.

    gun shops - looted

    police station - looted

    military base - looted

Sure you might find things here and there (I was surprised that Ricks police station had so much in storage) but for the most part it's going to be slim picking. However I'd be searching every military vehicle I could get my hands on.

And a crossbow is actually better since it works like a gun.

I always played the Amazon. I beat the first Diablo a couple times, made it to the final stage in Diablo II a couple times ... I think I might have won it once.

Daryl is becoming my favorite character. You got to love a guy who kills zombies with a crossbow.

Something like a war hammer would be ideal. Blunt, crushing weapon with a spike on the back end. Gives you options.

The Diggin' Guy who had a dream about burying bodies had damned well better not be forshadowing some kind of divine Jesus destiny for the group or something. I will tune the fuck out and never come backk.

If they follow the comic books you don't have to worry about that.

Already covered, but only certain gun/round combinations can be silenced.
If that were not the case, we would have silent M-16, deer rifles, etc.

Um there are plenty of m16s and m4s with supressors.

other than that am I the only one who is cringing at all the gun goofs? Ya know stuff like the safety on the glock, reracking the shotguns, etc?

Well, this show is already differing somewhat drastically from the comics in some details, but it seems that it's following the general story flow, at least.

If the comic storyline is followed, I expect the following in the very next episode:

So how long did the comic book series go on for?

And also, does anyone else think that this zombie (foreground, right)...

    looks like Kevin Bacon?

Even Zombies have Six Degrees of Separation! LOL!!

According to the Zombie Survival Guide, a good crowbar is about the best melee weapon/ multi-tool you can have in the post-apocalyptic zombie-world.

The more I think about it, the more I become convinced that if this show didn't have zombies in it, I would have already ditched it. The acting and writing is pretty disappointing. We were told this story was about the characters, not the zombies. Well, the characters suck. They're boring, fake, stupid and I don't care when they die.

Those are flash suppressors, not sound suppressors. They make it harder for the enemy to see your muzzle flash and pinpoint your exact location.

Automatic weapons can't be silenced because too much gas escapes too quickly. Also the high pressures would trash a silencer. Even the best are only good for so many shots, then the screening gets torn up.

I can make one in a few minutes with window screening (metal, not fiberglass is best) duct tape, and a pencil......but it's only good for sub-sonic pistol rounds. BTW that scene in "Menace to Society/Boys in The Hood" ? where they put potatoes on their shotgun barrels to silence them is total bullshit, unless they are just too hungry to cook a potato properly!

Anyway, why would you need a sword to cut through the skull if you are chopping the neck? All you'd need to worry about is the spinal column - which is a bitch BTW.

No one should be attacking Zombies with axes or swords except in a no choice situation where staying quiet is more important the just shooting.

I'd use an Axe because an Axe can also be used for non-Zombie killing stuff. You can't really do that with a sword.
