We live in a crazy world. Literally crazy. The other day I heard a black guy go nuts on another black guy on the radio (the host) because the host didn't like Michael Vick and wanted Obamacare repealed. "You racist, boy!" was the black caller's refrain. Flat out nuts.
The author makes some valid points. I don't necessarily like the idea, but, he's right. Not everyone will raise their kids with an open mind - will exclude certain books, even movies, from a child's inventory in an attempt to 'protect' them. This way, the kid still gets to read about Huck Finn's adventures and the original is still intact for those who want to read that one.
Classic America literature, no doubt. Anywho, I think everyone my age read that book whether in school or on their own. Somehow, we grew up functioning quite well in a multi-racial world. Surely our minds should have been twisted and turned to liquid evil!
From what I have heard, part of the reason for. Doing this is so that teachers do no have to explain some of the racial terminology of the time period to their students. Ummm, isn't that part of their job? To educate students about our countries history? If we fail to to educate children about our history, we are doomed to repeat it. But, maybe in the end that is what leftist controlled education system would like. They seem to thrive on that sort of thing.
But still the mystery remain! Was the N-word one of these? Nacogdoches NSFW nudiustertian Nunavut Nazi nincompoop nullify niacin
The ironic thing is that Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn are very powerful satire pointing out the total illogic of racism. The terminology is part of what is necessary to make that point. Thus, by removing that terminology because it seems "racist," the people who do this are reducing the impact of an anti-racist message!
Bull-fucking'-shit. Anyone with half a molecule for a brain can tell damn good and well what Twain's views on slavery and race were from the text. His words shouldn't be altered because fuckwitted teachers can't be assed to teach their students reading comprehension. My family "protected" me from a show that had a rather racist lead who looked down on hismore liberal family. Eventually, I saw teh show for myself and found out that the racist guy was more often than not the butt of the joke. In fact, there were many messages in the show that, had my mom not been butthurt over one point, she might have had a laugh at. Guess what that horrible show was? "All in the Family." Sure they will....until the original becomes out of print, and PCness will prevent an original and unabridged from being published for a good, long while....if ever again in most of our lifetimes.
Not the same thing at all - and don't get me wrong, I don't agree with the idea. Kids need to read all kinds of literature, but to extend that and say they need to read it in it's original form, then do we exclude English speaking kids from reading French literature or Italian literature?
That worked out real well for The Bible, didn't it? A book that people today literally take as Gospel even though it's been copied, re-written, altered, digested, shit-out, changed again, modernized, ass-raped, and destroyed to such an extent that they bare little resemblence to the original texts.
I don't disagree. I don't think kids should be censored from any form of art - whether it's literature, pictures, music or television/movies. But, many people don't think like you and I do. Lot's of original publications from Dickens exist today. Why would Twain's original publications not exist 100 years from now?
I have access to texts that are extremely close (other than a few uncertainties about spelling, and textual questions that concern significantly less than 1% of the total), and I do not see in what way a good translation "bears little resemblance to the original texts." What knowledge do you have of the original texts that justifies your assertion?
Preaching to the choir.....it's called "tunnel vision." Those who would alter the book wear blinders like a horse. Because the sheer evil power of uttering/thinking "that word" draws up from Hell a vortex of all the Satanic forces that ever existed since the beginning of time. So what will Jim be called anyway? How about Pigmentally Augmented James?
There is no argument to be made in defense of this. This is PC and censorship run mindlessly amok. Whoever came up with the idea needs to be dragged out into the street and beaten to death for crimes against literature.
The dumbing down of America continues. It is after all one of the techniques used by those in power to garner more power.
YES! And just to keep it "old school" + Huck Finnish, tar + feathered them, let them get bit by a rattlesnake, etc.
