I'd settle for something that was actually good, personally. I'd have room in my heart for both a good reboot and the good movies and series from the original franchise the same way I have room in my heart for both Star Trek and Star Wars, Babylon 5, BSG's miniseries and first season, Firefly, GitS: SAC, Cowboy Bebop, Outlaw Star, Ergo Proxy, etc. It's too bad Abrams Trek really didn't raise itself above the likes of Michael Bay's Transformers, or do an honest, full-on reboot and actually take advantage of its reboot status rather than pandering to nostalgia and pop-culture references.

Sincerely, I'll give you at least this:

Despite all the comparisons to TWOK (and the admitted "homages") keep firmly in mind that in the chronology of the Trekverse, this movie is no later than, and is presumably sooner than, the events of Space Seed.

THAT is the version of Khan to make comparisons to, not the one in TWOK

I just saw it, in 3D. Fun, but nothing astonishing. I totally predicted that they would bring back Kirk with Khan's deus ex sanguine. So many lens flares, flashing lights, and debris flying at you that they barely register as dramatic elements anymore.

Dayton, go see it and pretend it isn't a Star Trek movie, but a play by a bunch of young whippersnappers who are trying to re-create the Star Trek you know and love. And see if it holds up as a fan-fic movie. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

    Now there is an idea.

Assuming money is no issue, is it worth the extra to see it in 3D

Yes, Dayton, see it in 3-D I-Max, and buy the biggest popcorn with everything including nacho cheese on it.
    Go all out. :$:

3D didn't add too much to it, but if money's not an issue, I always say go for it. Then again, I'm not one of those inferior specimens of humans who can't view 3D, lest it give them a headache. :diablo:

I've seen it both ways and would say 3D adds little to the experience.

I would say it is, I watched in Real3D and IMAX 3D so far. I don't have a comparison to 2D but I would say it.is worth it for the few extra dollars. Plus it's the first Trek movie in 3D.

It's not worth paying to see it in 3-D (this is my opinion of 99% of movies available in 3-D, to be fair). If you're like me, by now you have a few pairs of 3-D glasses saved up. Just look up close times for 2-D and 3-D showings, pay for the regular 2-D ticket price, and sneak into the 3-D showing.

This was the first 3D movie to give me a headache. I blame the rendering in PP. Which added nothing at all (but then, it never does - IMHO of course).

I finally got around to seeing it yesterday. Overall I liked it. It's a good, solid popcorn movie with lots of actions and incredible visuals.

    Pros:
STID had what none of the original Trek movies had but should have -- a huge budget and excellent production values. I was continuously impressed that I was watching an epic Trek movie that pulled out all the stops from a technical perspective. On the human side, all of the actors were superb and had their moments to shine. The "bromance" between Kirk and Spock felt just as solid as it did in the original series between Shatner and Nimoy. The interiors of the Enterprise looked more believable than the first movie, even though they still defied the laws of physics. The action was solid and the overall story was fairly engaging. I also loved the little nods to the original series and even DS9 with Section 31 and the reference to the "Mud" incident.

    Cons:
Now having seen it, I can also ask the question "why Khan"? John Harrison could have simply remained John Harrison without having to associate him with Khan. While it wasn't a deal breaker for me in terms of enjoying the film, it felt totally pointless. Also, Benedict Cumberbatch was excellent as always, but he's WHITE! Khan is INDIAN! Sorry, it just didn't work. Although the whole "magic blood" thing didn't bother me as much as others, it still could have worked better if Harrison were the product of modern genetic engineering engaged by Section 31 than forcing the character to be Khan. And while I enjoyed the movie overall, it still felt like something was missing that I can't quite put my finger on, and I think Trek 2009 was the better of the two films.

My overall rating: 7.5/10. A good, solid summer popcorn movie that was enjoyable, yet still could have been better.

^Not as glowing a review as I expected of you BD. Though it was pretty unbiased and honest in my opinion so I respect that a great deal.

I'm not a gusher. If I like something I say so, and if I have issues I say so. I loved the first movie warts and all, but this one seemed to be missing the fun factor of the first one. I still enjoyed it, but there was room for improvement.

Save your money. As RM already said, you aren't open to any ideas that aren't your own. And I can tell you this movie has even fewer space battles than the last one.

So, stay at home. Or go take the missus out to see "The Great Gatsby" or some shit.

The "Fun Factor" was precisely what I HATED about the first one. If I want to see Jim Carey schtick, I'll go see a Jim Carey movie.

Gotta go with Nova here...the slapstick in the first movie was funny, but I didn't miss it here. I understand why TPTB went that route in '09 to show that this isn't you'r father's Trek and all, but this one didn't really need that so much.

"Well, if it isn't James Tiberius Perfecthair!"

    THAT was fun.

Chekov's expression when he was told to put on a red shirt - THAT was fun.

"I'm currently displaying several attitudes, to which do you refer?" - THAT was fun. (I almost fell out of my seat)

Swollen hands and beaming into a water park?

See, that's where I bitch about McTrek on principle. If it ain't "my father's Trek", they shouldn't fucking dress it up that way. You know which Trek also wasn't "my father's Trek"? Fuckin' Voyager. :brood:
