Well of course. Who do you think sits in that car outside your house late at night and bums off your wifi? -Desperate College Kids- (an idea for a television program I've always wanted to pitch to the networks)

That's not enough. They would need to be culled. These people are so malignant that they would keep sliding back inside over and over again like Charles Logan from "24."

Social Security, et al. should go out as usual. There's a link somewhere. Lemme see if I can find it...

    Ah, here we go: http://www.usa.gov/shutdown.shtml

Not from a site that was three years between announcement and launch, no. Imagine what just Nick could have done with three years of lead time for switching from OldFrodge to NuFrodge.

So we'll add to the list of "Things Castle Doesn't 'Get'" your belief that the Internet runs on hamsters.

That said, over 1,000,000 people successfully enrolled yesterday. Since you're so concerned about their ability to log on, I'll be happy to give you daily updates. Just give the word.

Shutdown happened on 01 October, start of the new fiscal year. Social Security and other benefit checks will still go out as scheduled. Meanwhile, with my new free time, I made some bread in my bread machine, scanned in some old photos, and otherwise tried not to notice I am without a paycheck until this is resolved.

I think you should sell crack on the street corner until this is over. To get started, roll some gravel in some flour to get some start-up cash rolling. The first few crackheads won't notice.

Or, perhaps you could sell yourself as a high-class male prostitute?

Okay, can't locate the source that released that, so either they've pulled or updated it, and there are no official numbers being released as of yet.

Most of the glitches seem to be a result of people flooding sites and hotlines because they thought yesterday was the only day they could register. :bang:

Now, be a tool and claim I'm lying.

The healthcare stuff passed into law, and now the Republicans are chucking a massive wobbler and basically saying that if things won't be done their way they won't be done at all.

It's interesting, but it actually parallels what happened when Medicare (our UHC system) was introduced in Australia in the 1970's. The right-wing party tried to oppose it by blocking supply to the government, however that led to an election which saw the government returned and the system established.

It also parallels the "End of the World as We Know It" hysteria that some Congresscritters were shoveling when Social Security was enacted. And again with Medicare. And again with Medicaid.

Now, quick, someone dust off ye olde "It's a Ponzi Scheme!!!!11!" speech.

John Stewart nailed it, I thought.

Obamacare is the law. You don't get to renegotiate it endlessly by holding everything else to ransom. And the crazies have taken over the House because gerrymandered electoral boundaries reward the extremists.

Well the TEA party is making sure that the republicans lose more power next election. When it comes time to vote people aren't going to distinguish between TEA Party and not TEA Party republicans.

Pretty much a text book case of cutting off your nose to spite your face.

Social Security is a ponzi scheme. Obamacare is a massive federal power grab. Not the same thing.

You're going to have to explain this to me. From where I am, this looks like a huge gift to the healthcare insurers.

This law passed both houses of congresss, was upheld by the supreme court and the president who signed it into law was re-elected decisively. Yet, the Republican Party assumes they are fighting for "the will of the people."

    Ok, Fucksticks.

Nah, that's just the excuse they're using.

It's a power grab because at the root of Obamacare is a federal requirement to purchase a commercial product, whether you want it or not. All the current cheerleaders are going to be singing a different tune when the gubbermint decides to use that power to make them do something they're not in favor of. Like, I dunno, "everyone must buy shares of Bank of America because it's too big to fail."

Or "everyone must buy flood insurance."
    "Umm . . . I live on top of a mountain."
"Doesn't matter, we must subsidize idiots who built houses on floodplains."

We were never off of the slippery slope. People like you don't seem to realize that giving more and more power to the federal government is not a good idea.

Unless it's something you approve of. Then we get to the "Smaller Government...except for NASA" argument.
