Generation Self-Entitlement: Daughter sues parents for tuition money

I've got two words for you: promissory estoppel. If you promise your kid that you'll pay for the college of her choice, and then, for example, she applies only to colleges costing $40,000+/yr on the basis of that promise, she may well be legally entitled to have you pay for college. You can't just go around promising people things and then reneging after your promises have been substantially relied on.

Holding people to their promises after those promises have been relied on at some cost to the promisee isn't self-entitlement; it's basic contract law. If you think that contract law doesn't apply as between parents and children then you're really, really wrong. None of which is to say that this case is necessarily a good one or any kind of a winner for the daughter; rather, it's just an unremarkable contract case that will have its outcome be readily determined based on the underlying facts and is interesting only because it's unusual for a young daughter to sue her parents for violating a contract.

Was there a clause in her contract that illicit eating before dinner would render said contract null and void? No? Then you're in trouble, Mister!

If you're not a hypocrite then you can't be a good parent.

A good parent wants things better for their kids. Which means doing things the parents did not do or avoiding the things they did do that were harmful.

In regards to contracts. Juevniles cannot make contracts can they? Thus, can an adult be held to an oral contract made with a juevenile? I doubt it. And this female in question was undoubtedly under 18 when some of those "promises" were made.

She is free to go to community college and pay $15 per unit now.

Sorry, spoiled little girl, but life doesn't work out how we want it. If you get a job, you can probably afford a basic place to live, and have food to eat. Save up money over time, and then attend a good community college. From there, it's all up to you how well you succeed.

My daughter came home from college one summer and tried to pull the "I'm an adult and I'm not doing chores" bit and thought she'd use our place as a motel. I'm pretty liberal as a parent (they never had curfews) but I told her to get on the bus, head back to school, and find somewhere else to live for the summer because I wasn't putting up with that bullshit.

Today? We get along great. It was just an unpleasant teenage phase that lasted on and off for a year. My second one had one rebellious phase too, but thank God the baby didn't.

My eldest is almost 30 now, with a child of her own, and pretty much said that this girl was a spoiled brat and that she had had her own bad times to me as a teen, but nothing like that.
