From the melodramatic way he describes his predicament, you'd think he owes millions. In fact, he owes only $88,000. And that's after 20 years of knowingly evading his tax bill, with penalties added on. After a long and very successful career as a published author across multiple mediums, I have a very difficult time believing that Peter David can't come up with $88,000. It's not as if he's retired. He's still writing comics for Marvel. Two current titles I'm aware of: Spiderman 2099, and the upcoming Scarlet Spider series. At least David is offering to autograph something in return for his handouts. Of course, I had to laugh at his proposed "grand prize" for the biggest contributor - the rare privilege of being allowed to read a short story he hadn't gotten around to submitting to magazines yet. That's right - he's begging for money, so he's going to give away a story instead of submitting it to a publisher who might pay for it. That makes sense. Anyway, I'm sure @garamet will be along shortly to advise that any critics of this kind of online panhandling are jealous "haters" and how nobody understands the nature of freelance work.
Hmmm, interesting question. Do postings to various internet fora constitute "published work?" Wordforge & similar, blogs, Facebook, Instagram . . .
You've been remarkably self-reflective lately, but admitting that you're "gross" and "dumb" seems unnecessarily negative. Do you need help, or just Photoshop?
Oh my god, I see what you did there - you took a rep aimed at you and nonsensically turned the whole thing around to make it look like I was calling myself dumb. That's so brilliant. Incredible, what a triumph. Why have you never done this before, it's so amazing.
If there were a hysterically funny rating here, I would have hit it for your last sentence. Oh, the plight of freelance writers!
You're a published author, but not nearly as prolific as either David or KRAD. Yet, I don't see you panhandling for rent money or begging for donations to pay your IRS bill. What the difference between you and them?
Old washed up hippee from the 60's with a faux arrogance complex on a message board seeking a daddy to offset the costs of depends and prune juice.
Don't you just love getting morality lectures from people that want debter's prisons back, and worship an economic system thought up by slave traders? Doesn't that just warm you in the cockles?
Seriously, take a vote. How many of you are okay with this guy mismanaging his money, dodging the IRS and begging others for cash on the internet? Is this in any universe okay?
Apparently "freelance" is a trigger word for those who don't have any concept of what it entails. No explication from those who do it is allowed to filter through the narrative running through their heads. Oddly, many of them applaud the “small business owner” as some sort of hero. Apparently only some methods of “being your own boss” are acceptable. That said, any freelancer should, if possible, have a fallback.
