George Washington was a founding father, president, and general in the revolution.

Robert E Lee was a traitor who waged war against America. He waged war against America. Fucking sink that through your head. His statue should be in the same place as the statues of others who waged war on America.

Here's your answers: Because for all their faults, folks like Jefferson and Washington contributed something greater than themselves to this country. Their ideas, which they fought for, led to a nation which strives to treat all of its citizens equally. The hagiographers who wrote about Lee celebrate him as a man who fought "The Lost Cause," not as a man, who after the war, realized that he was wrong and worked to correct his mistakes. If you want to celebrate that man, then the statues of him should be of him in civilian clothes, and showing him symbolically rejecting the Confederacy. There's nobility in someone admitting that they were wrong and working to make up for that. There's no nobility in celebrating a person who fought for a cause which included owning human beings.

Show us Lee fighting as fiercely against the Klan as he did against the Union, and we'll talk. Until then, the statues and memorials celebrating a soldier who fought for the Confederacy should come down.

The confederacy lasted four years, slavery existed and was held up by the government for 75 years, and then continued to kill individuals and oppress minoritiesfor decades to come, why give this country a pass? Shouldn't you be advocating the removal of monuments of our founding fathers?
