And I said I wouldn't object to removing it, if there was enough of an organized effort to do so. I'm just not going to play the equivalency game, and pretend it has the same meaning as Confederate monuments, or the same meaning it would have in a formerly Communist country for that matter.

Not necessary okay, but a different set of rules apply. If you want the Lenin statue down, there aren't many legal avenues to go down in order to do it. I suppose you could call it a public nuisance or an eyesore and try to have it condemned. The easier way would be to just buy the property and remove the statue.

Confederate statues should go down if a city decides to take them down, not if a bunch of melenial hipsters decide it. Confederate memorials to the dead should not be taken down.

Doesn't Seattle have a statue of Lenin? I'm pretty sure millions died because of him. Is that statue taken down? What about statues of FDR? He imprisoned an ethnic group?

Actually, if someone wants the Fremont Lenin statue gone there is a very simple and straightforward way to do it: Buy it.

As mentioned multiple times, it's privately owned and on private land. And it's been up for sale for years.

Raise $250k and you can tear down that statue yourself! How very capitalist.

Yeah, and if people want all those Fighting Sioux logos down from that arena, they can just buy it, right? :diacanu:

Or, they can try to talk the person(s) who own the property into making the change themselves. Totally unreasonable to a totalitarian like yourself, I'm sure.

Okay, so the Fighting Sioux (were) on public buildings so I guess that is somewhat relevant to the Confederate monuments, but you're gonna have to walk me through your argument here.

Would anybody care about a Confederate statue in Georgia, Lithuania, or Ukraine?

The logos are still in the Ralph Englestad Arena, which was the primary cause for all the butthurt. The arena is private property, owned by the company which was run by the man it is named after. Really though, this argument applies to any team using a logo like this, as far as the absurdity of saying if people have a problem with it, they should just buy it.

Communism has had a far greater impact on the world than the CSA ever did. Anyone with half a brain should be able to see why honoring Lenin is a bad idea.

Who says the statue is there to honor him? Maybe it's ironic. You know, like a YouTuber who wears Nazi paraphernalia as a "joke." :diacanu:

How many statues do you know of that are ironic.

Aside from the one at Harvard of course. The statue of the three lies.

Is there still much butthurt? A scan of recent news stories doesn't turn up much. It seems that once the name was changed and the stuff removed from the public buildings it died down. Apparently there are still some inside the privately owned arena though.

Now I'm not seeing the relevance except for private ownership. The folks that own the Lenin statue are actively shopping it (and have been for decades) are the Engelstads actively shopping the arena?

Haven't read the whole thread, but has it come up that the vast majority of these confederate monuments were put up in Jim Crow days as a deliberate "fuck you", to black people, and for no other reason?

That's the "heritage", that's being cried over.

Poor little rich girl didn't get to be the Russian Paris Hilton, so her revenge the rest of her life was writing propaganda tracts with terrible prose.

As for her family, she spit on them, and changed her name to erase her old identity to wash them off of her.

In a somewhat related note two college professors (so called) have declared that requirements to learn basic math are some how racist because certain minorities tend to not do very well at math. They demand "social justice math" be taught instead which, I assume, would mean blacks and hispanics wouldn't ever have to learn real math.

Some? They're all over the arena - that was probably the point since the school almost changed the name as it was being built. As for people bitching about it, that's coming from people on campus, around the state, and from the reservations. The only butthurt you really see in the papers anymore has to do with the "Sioux forever" side bitching about the new logo.

Your ridiculous assertion that if someone had a problem with this Lenin statue that they could buy it, rather than addressing the actual point being made.

You stated the Lenin statue was privately owned, so I brought up another example of something that was privately owned. The arena is privately owned.

Seems to me that would be a perfect example of capitalism winning over communism. Your disagreement will confirm my assertion. Go for it.

I would say no, since he has yet to recognize the difference between government censorship of speech, and private entities refusing to provide a platform for speech they despise.

    Okay good.

So do you understand the difference between privately owned and for sale and privately owned and not for sale?
