If Lincoln didn't hang him as a traitor and still considered the ex confederates as fellow Americans and never considered the confederacy a separate country, then we shouldn't consider them traitors, but people who were simply defending their land and family. Therefore, the statue doesn't really represent what people think it does.

Show me where Lee's words have been used to justify granting rights to minorities. While Jefferson probably never would have considered the idea of a black man with a funny name being elected President, his words, "all men are created equal," made that possible. When Lee is celebrated for saying something similar, we can talk about him having a statue. But if all you want to talk about his time fighting for a cause which included the following phrase in it's founding document

then forget about it.

Were you this upset when people tore down statues of Saddam? Did you cry about "history being erased"? How about when the Russians ripped down the statues of Stalin, Lenin, and others associated with the USSR? Did that bother you?

As stated above, Lee encouraged his men to be good citizens, he honored the surrender, he was President of a university. As for Sadam and Lenin, not even remotely the same thing.

I don't think you have to think of Lee as a traitor to not think he should be honored with a statue in the town you live in.

First, Lincoln enacted the plan that allowed rebels to re-enter the Union IF the swore allegiance to the Union. That's it. All you had to do. That was his policy. It was the abolitionist dominated Congress that threw that plan away and designated the Southern states, many already sworn back in, as conquered provinces which could not come back in unless they first ratified the 14th Amendment. How can you ratify an amendment if you're not a state?

Second, "white people" didn't lose the Civil War. The South did. If you'll check, you'll find there were white people in the North then as well, and even Southern slave holding states which stayed in the Union... Missouri, Kentucky, and Maryland.

Because Washington and various other slave owning founding fathers by and large believed slavery was a fundamentally bad thing and hoped it would eventually die out on its own. After all, Washington's will specified that all the slaves on his plantation would be freed once Martha Washington died.

But like it or not Robert E. Lee and various others went to war against the lawful elected government of the United States for the express purpose of slave owners being allowed to keep slaves.

Sure it was about "states rights". Specifically the rights of each state to keep slavery legal and in fact protected.
