They did that with the New Universe series back in the 80s. It only lasted for a few years.

Characters of diverse ethnic backgrounds isn't the problem.

Shitty writing from fanboy writers with no real life experience other than being grown up fanboys is the problem.

This new generation of writers has no clue how to write exciting, action filled comics.

Take Miles Morales. Couldn't care less about his ethnicity. But once you get past the novelty of a black Spider-Man, what reason is there to buy his book?

In the first 50 issues of the original Amazing Spider-Man, Spidey's entire classic rogues gallery had been established. Green Goblin, Doc Ock, Mysterio, Sandman, Electro, Rhino, Kraven.

By contrast, who does Miles fight? Does he have even one unique villain to battle?

The answer to that is a resounding "no." For years Bendis focused on tedious family drama and Ganke, one of the dumber characters of the past 10 years.

To get me to buy the book, hire someone who knows how to write the kind of bombastic superhero stories that made Marvel famous, not "edgy" counter-culture SJW douchebags .

When you're on the same side as Tasvir in an argument, you're supposed to stop dead in your tracks, push the computer away, look in the nearest mirror, and go "oh my god, what has become of me!?".

Writers from previous generations usually came to the comic industry from different backgrounds and careers that had nothing to do with comics. Many had served in the military. Many worked in other fields for years before it dawned upon them to pursue writing as a career, much less writing for comic books.

Today's writers? Grown up fanboys. Campus snowflakes who, instead of serving in the military, were protesting the fact that recruiters were on campus. No life experience beyond having read comics as a kid. Can't write about what you don't know.

Ever wonder why you don't see a book like Sgt. Rock these days? Because this generation of writers wouldn't be capable of it. That's why the focus is on stupid crap like "will Bendis return Superman to his Jewish roots?"

His main villain is Prowler, who is also his uncle and partially responsible for him getting bitten by the spider that gave him his powers. But now you’re just complaining that they should be like they were 50 years ago when they’ve been coasting on these same characters for 50 years, doing nothing new. Now that they tried something new, it’s a possible because you don’t find it to be original. Just a copy, like they’ve been doing for decades.

It’s almost like these are really excuses and you don’t have a fucking clue what you’re talking about.

    You're an idiot.

No, I didn't argue that comics should be like they were 50 years ago (although going back to their roots and bringing back a lot of the classic elements from those days would be a great thing).

My argument was that there is nothing particularly compelling about Miles Morales and many of the other racial quota characters once you get past the novelty of having a gender swapped person of color inhabit that role.

Yeah, I know about Prowler, and the character inspires nothing but yawns. The point was that Miles doesn't have a rogues gallery, no cool villains to battle. That's what superheroes do, that's what their comics are about. The greats of the industry understood this. You could mix in personal problems and melodrama, but you also had to deliver some action with the hero defeating some baddie.

Yet you don’t read it, so you’re just talking out your ass and really complaining about an issue that is systemic with both Marvel and DC which is lack of risk taking when it comes to characters.

Once he took up the mantle of Spiderman, Miles inherited the rogues gallery that comes with it. That's how it traditionally goes with legacy characters. Not that new characters can't be added to that gallery, but other than Batman, who's had any memorable and lasting new enemies in the last decade? Court of Owls was introduced in 2011, and Professor Pyg in 2007.
