That's why in NC, non-CCW permit holders have to be granted permission by their county sheriff every time they want to buy a firearm...though I think that law goes farther back to the Jim Crow era. On the other hand, as has already been pointed out, that 80% of white gun owners is in the ballpark of the percentage of people in the US that are white.
California's first ban on assault rifles (signed by then Governor Reagan) came after the Black Panther Party got big in Oakland and there were laws post Civil War designed to keep blacks from owning guns. The gun lubbers love using that argument to pretend they aren't racists, but the NRA's silence over Philando Castile, a law abiding citizen who did everything he was supposed to when stopped with a weapon, says everything.
You don't need opinions based on race ( ) to know that we have had a long history of governing to target minorities. We all know the Japanese internment happened, right? That there were laws that banned older people from citizenship, then had this used against them to prove they were loyal to Japan and seize their farmlands to give to white folks, who were pissed off that Japanese owned farmers were better off than they? And there was Jim Crow in the South, and laws on the East Coast discriminating against non Anglican Europeans, and laws in California discriminating against Mexicans and Chinese. San Diego had laws barring Jews from owning property in La Jolla until the mid-seventies.
You've got the facts somewhat confused. The ban on loaded open carrying was signed by Reagan in response to Black Panthers carrying guns at rallies. The first California assault weapon ban (Roberti-Roos) didn't happen until decades later, 1989. I know because I have three guns registered under the act. The NRA was in a bit of a public relations bind there, as they have constituencies of police officers and concealed carriers. But I think most of Gunforge here denounced the killing of Castile. And it isn't apparent there was any racial animus at fault there, only a stupidly over-reactive cop.
Because of course none of the people affected by those events are still alive, right? They don't have children and grandchildren who remember what happened to their family members, right? I'd expect this kind of Whiteboy 'splainin' from the white boyz, but I keep expecting better of you. Oh, well.
I’m pretty sure the NRA didn’t defend Philando Castile because he was breaking the law when he was pulled over - he was in illegal possession of a controlled substance. That was really a hard thing to parse - on the one hand the shooting was wrong. On the other hand, you have an organization that supports LAWFUL firearms ownership. There was no way to win if you touch this one, so the NRA remained silent. Of the infinitesimally small percentage of carry holders who break the law, Philando was sadly one of them.
Thanks for the correction They've been shilling all that "keep gunz to protect yourselves from tyrannical government" crap. He told the officer exactly where the gun was and got shot for it. Seems like an easy enough case for the NRA to rally around and push their legitimacy to exist. Can't imagine why they didn't jump on that. True. Regardless, the silence from the NRA and other pro gun rights places was deafening.
^There was no way for the NRA to turn this into a big issue without alienating sides friendly to them, so they were silent. Implying that the NRA didn't speak out because Castillo was black is an ugly, unsupportable claim. One of the NRA's stars is Colion Noir, a YouTube gun channel guy whose program is carried by NRA-TV. He's quite popular.
I'm saying a black guy is a *prominent* face in the organization. The NRA supports, promotes, and streams a show featuring a black man, because it's a good show that popular with the membership and because they're trying to reach more diverse audiences.
I would imagine there's a sizable contingent of NRA members that wouldn't see a black guy shot by cops as a bad thing.
And I would imagine a sizable contingent of Black Lives Matter members who enjoy it when the situation is reversed.
yeah I guess that point zoomed right over a lot of folks' heads. If blacks are 12% of the total population and hispanics (big wild-card because they can be black or white depending on who needs to prove a political point) make up the difference then whites are about 80 percent of the population.
half these motherfuckers on wordforge would shit themselves if they knew how many blacks I work with own guns for the same reason conservative whites own guns - self defense, home defense, or just because they hunt or like shooting guns .
meanwhile....... Officer Peterson has been caught in another lie. He said he heard gunfire outside the school but the transcripts of his radio calls clearly show him telling dispatch the shooting was inside the building.
sorry Anna - not every black person behaves exactly as you think they should. Sorry to disappoint you......but this is a free country after all.
