The gunman entered Great Mills High School in Great Mills, Maryland, at the beginning of the school day and shot a female student in a hallway, Sheriff Tim Cameron said live on News4. A male student also was hit by a bullet.

The shooter exchanged fire with a school resource officer, trained, armed deputy sheriff, Cameron said. The shooter was wounded; the officer was not.

What's exceptional is that he actually shot what he was aiming at.

At any rate, an incident like this in no way validates the insanity of arming school employees in response to what is at worst a miniscule threat.

Why?

Why would anyone use this as an example of why it would be a good idea to arm teachers? The resource officer is a Sheriff's Deputy.

Like I said I've been convinced against arming teachers, but cops or private security is a way to go.

You think the average law enforcement officer has the skills to engage an active shooter with their weapon already drawn and a hundred kids running and screaming across the lines of fire without a high risk of hitting and killing innocents?

A member of a SWAT team or specialized hostage rescue team maybe. But not an average cop who spends what? A couple of hours at the range firing at paper targets once a month to keep their weapons certification.

I'm not sure what "...with their weapon already drawn..." has to do with anything, but this guy managed to pull it off. I'm not sure if he's one of their more "average" LEO or some sort of high speed/low drag "operator".

Actually I read elsewhere that he was a member of the SWAT team.

When I said "with their weapon drawn" anyone who knows anything about guns (or has talked to someone who does) will tell you that despite what they show in movies and television it is all but impossible to shoot first against someone whose gun is already out, aimed, and they have the will to fire. It is simply a matter of physics and geometry.

Here's a hint. When you need to invent the other side's arguments because you can't deal with their actual points, that's a sure sign you're kidding yourself.

Actually, that's not always true. It's also a matter of reaction time. google "21 foot rule".

But it's also an unlikely scenario in this case. There is no indication that I'm aware of that the shooter "had the drop on" the resource officer. He was probably paying too much attention to his intended victims to notice the resource officer until it was too late. Remember...the officer moved to engage the shooter. I'm about 99.9% sure he had his gun drawn before he encountered the shooter.
