The correct pronunciation is "Tranah". Just like, when I lived in Calgary, you could always tell the out-of-towners because they would pronounce the "a". It's correctly pronounced "Calgry".

Just as an aside, no one from Staten Island can say Staten Island. It's "Stun-Iland." It's that damn glottal click. Then again, my grandparents came from NewFOUNDland, which is now called NewfenLAND.

We must travel in very different circles. I've never heard it pronounced any other way than "Tranah" (locals) or "Toronto" (tourists). Basically, as you said, the locals elide the first part of the word and never pronounce the second "T".
His mother was Canadian. His dad is from Transylvania. He was born in Alaska, raised in Serbia, and he lives in Germany although he claims citizenship in Holland, works in Austria, ran for office in Finland, and pays taxes in Kazakhstan, and his new girlfriend lives in Freedonia. Hopefully that clears that up.
