None of them are really talking to an all powerful God and rule setter. In the cases of people like TLS, Poodle, Chaos and the others the religion just gives them confidence to express their dickheadeness openly.

For good people their religion can often make them better as it validates there is purpose behind them.

For the average schmo it doesn't change much about them at all.

I do have to agree that for a certain segment of society religion, and atheism, becomes a bludgeon and shield for them. It is about backing up their hate speak with some poison rationality. It happens in asian countries with buddhism and taoist beliefs. I have seen this bullshit in the furry community, and the trans community.

This is actually not religion. This is a psychological personality trait that can manifest with almost anything. It is in the trek community with things like kirk vs pickard. Abrahms vs roddenberry. I have learned to try and make it very obvious I joke when I rib other fandoms, or that I am so disliked that no one will back my whining about things I hate. People start following the hate and then it forms in groups who use it as a cudgel against people who the cool kids do not like. By cool kids I mean influencers. That is all an influencer does. That is what the pop internet has become. It is all influencers telling their followers who to hate on.

People, those you mentioned an others, use religion to be assholes without even giving a thought as to the purpose of religion. Any true "Christian" would know that the purpose of religion is to help the person live a better life. That The Bible was written 2000 years ago by people who's understanding of the world at the time thought those ideas would make them better people. Christians today realize that those ideas are outdated and many no longer apply.

The people you mentioned and others like them have no intention of being better people. So, they rely on nonsense written 2000 years ago to justify their bad behavior.
