Even if it could be honestly reduced to "fashy" vs. "woke garbage" (it can't), the answer would still be "no." But entertainment that actually prioritizes being entertaining above all is clawing out a comeback.

Big studios are slowly remembering that they aren't willing to sacrifice profitability for the superficial image of progressive moral superiority, and I will savor every minute of it.

    *Checks Marvel phase 5 slate*
We've got "The Marvels" which is Captain Marvel 2, and has Photon, who's a black woman, and Ms. Marvel, who's Pakistani-Muslim.
    We've got Blade, who's black.
We've got "Captain America: New World Order" with Falcon-Cap who's black.
    We've got "Ironheart" who's a black girl.
We've got season 2 of "Loki" with the whole bisexual gender flipping thing going on.
We've got "Thunderbolts" with Ghost who's black.

Yeah, no White Power Man, or Fashy-Man in there.

Who says it is? If you believe that, go talk to what's left of Voltron reboot fandom and they'll be quick to drag that aspect on top of every other Picard-level misfire that the creators took with a story more threadbare than the soap opera I watch.

No, the problem is criticism after the series end but all the howling and bemoaning that takes place before a movie or show even airs over supervisor shit we damn sure know they never gave a shit (like preserving "Danish culture" with The Little Mermaid or insisting that making a tomboy explicit trans in a musical they never watched is what killed the West Side Story remake and nor the fact that it opened to theatres only in a pandemic), which wears people out on giving a sit when said movie or show finally comes out.

It's a case of a boy crying wolf one too many times and all it's doing is making legitimate media discourse next to impossible. Y'all CHUDs are hurting the very cause you pretend to care about.

    *Checks cartoons*
We've got a lesbian Velma and an Indian-American Velma.
We've got Harley Quinn season 4 coming, and Harley and Ivy are in full couple mode.
Harley Quinn is heavily anti-CHUD. and quite popular if it keeps getting renewed.

So, when's this "go woke, go broke" shit suppose to happen?
Seems to be taking its sweet time.

Listen to yourself. Not a single speculative comment on whether the stories are decent, the producers/directors/actors have a proven history of solid entertainment. Just "Are they 'good' by virtue of checking the 'correct' boxes." Reducing everything to a binary between "boilerplate progressive 'representation' as content" versus "White Power Fascism" like a teenaged twitter "activist." :jayzus:

The Marvels is going to be shit, because Brie Larson is cancer.
I don't know anything about the new Blade, but the absence of Wesley Snipes is going to be a huge hurdle to overcome.
Falcon Cap had best bring something more than another paint-by-numbers "do better" speech, or that's gonna fall flat on its ass.
No opinion of Ironheart. The fact that it involves a black girl neither adds nor detracts from any potential appeal.
Same with "Thunderbolts." If that's a Red Hulk reference, it is peculiar to make someone who is not General Ross the face of it.
Loki didn't suck. Maybe season 2 won't suck.

I still laugh my ass off seeing CHUD Trek geeks pretend they actually liked Enterprise the entire time to talk about how good Trek was "in the good ol' days" as if they didn't bitch about sexy T'Pol or when the show changed its format.

The makers of She-Hulk and Rings of Power, off the top of my head.

But to preemptively make that part of the ad campaign before it airs is perfectly alright? You do understand that studios are now including this in their promotion strategy, don't you? It's not working, but they still try.

Generalizing for the purpose of prejudging people as a group. For shame. :nono:

I care about being entertained by franchises that want my money, and see ZERO virtue in rewarding a shit production simply because it is "representative" or is tailored to piss somebody off.

Marvel has a good track record.
Their genuinely universally bad ones can be counted on one hand.

To the tune of an Oscar and a billion in box-office.
But okay, she pushes your personal "yuck" button, so that's objective because reasons.

Yes, Tom Holland and Mark Ruffalo had a nightmare of a time winning people over, and Hulk and Spidey were never enjoyed ever again.
Ditto Jon Bernthal. Poor Jon Bernthal, he could never get out from under Tom Jane's shadow.
    ()

Remember, the people who fill your head with this nonsense predicted total box-office doom for Captain Marvel.
And like, they didn't shut up even as they were failing. They acted like Baghdad Bob, or Karl Rove in the '09 election.
These people are dumb, and you're dumb for liking them.

Just rolled in on RSS, Titans got renewed for season 4.
Starfire's still black, and Beast Boy's still Asian.
It'll be cancelled any day now though.
Because of the "bad writing" that people hate so much.
So much that it didn't just get renewed.

I avoid Marvel cuz it's just not my thing, but given how many people decried this as going against Tolkien's vision despite his estate giving it's blessing and being happy Peter Jackson was out the picture, I can definitely understand people being a bit more skeptical.

So far, the only "progressive" thing I've heard about the series is it had a woman elf warrior doing the same shit Legolas did and black characters existing.

    What am I missing here?

And why do you think that is? An ad team's job is to get butts in seats, and if they have to do misdirection or lean into the politics of the day, they're gonna do whichever one works to give the project attention. I usually wait until a 2nd or 3rd trailer comes out before making a decision, especially with anything coming out of Netflix.

The content is what will get people to stay or not, as you say yourself.

If you think that's all representation is there for, that says more about you than Hollywood.

At the end of the day, if they've gotten your money, that's all they care about. And making content that includes groups other than white cishet males means they get even more money.

    It's business to them.

Even us wokesters know that.

But I'm glad I live in a society where they are no longer only kowtowing to Karens and Chads in media.

Yes, comedy is serious business, and characters within it should have no foibles.
Lower Decks should be about the Vulcan crew.
    Minus the rebellious one.
Rebellious Vulcan girl is too spicy for UA.

Don't flip me that fourth wave feminist gaslighting, Anita. :dayton:

No, she's not "too spicy." No, I'm not intimidated by the awesome power of her "bad bitch energy." She's an obnoxious child with no manners or consideration for others, and shitting on her for it would be fair game even if it weren't a comedy.

It used to be conservatives who use the term “entitled” in reference to people on welfare. Now, it’s left-leaning people defending Mariner. Her character is absolutely (possibly by design) a caricature of Chicago’s North Shore entitled brats who are angry their parents were more concerned with appearances than raising their children to be decent human beings.

I also dislike Mariner as a character.

    I mean, again, comedy.
If this were TNG, then, fire away.
Cerritos is the "Bad New Bears" of ships.
It's kinda the gimmick they've got going.
It's suggested heavily in the opening animation.

And the 'bad news Bears' of ships is about as far away from Rodenberry's vision as you could possibly get. Personally I think he took it too far in TNG, when he made it a rule that there was no real interpersonal conflict on the ship because everyone was more civilized and advanced than that now. Hell, even the writers revolted that that was too far, making it difficult to write stories.

But Trek isn't caricatures of humans doing stupid shit to antagonize one another. That's what comedy means far too often these days. I'm glad they aren't doing it live action.

If you like that that's fine, there's room for more than one interpretation.

But not liking it is A-OK too and honestly far closer to the spirit of what Trek was supposed to be for decades.

Even TNG had it's share of Starfleet crews that got killed off by the threat of the week, which the Enterprise gang would then address without breaking a sweat. Star Trek has long had a running theme that everyone in Starfleet was stupid or evil or stupid compared to the particular crew we're watching. :async:

I remember being low-key mind blown watching For The Uniform, when the other Starfleet captain assigned to catch Eddington turns out to be a decent and agreeable and competent person, who only fails after falling for the same trick that Sisko also fell for so you can't really judge him too harshly. That's the sort of thing you almost never saw back then.

George Primmin, too. He's kind of a dick to Odo at first, but also he's a competent security officer that helps save the day despite not being in the main cast? Incredible.

I'll be sure to tell that to the crew of the Discovery.

I'm not getting the "entitled" bit?
quite the opposite, she's usually doing everything she can to put her acknowledged place of privilege on the line.
she was dead set against anyone knowing her parentage as it'd either get her special treatment or at least leave an impression of it.
