3 issues: 1. If it's multifunction, it'd better perform each of its functions at least as well as separate, dedicated devices would. This is why I considered getting an unlocked Motorola Q to drop my SIM card into. (T-Mobile's only comparable offering is the BlackBerry Pearl.) However, where PPC/Phone works out for me, DAP/Phone doesn't. Not unless the damn thing has got INSANE battery life, which this iPhone probably doesn't. 2. Touchscreens are very cool, very teh sexay. Probably very ANNOYING when it's on a device you have in close proximity to or resting against your skin while in use. 3. As mentioned, I'm not a Cingular customer. And I'm not going to break my contract or pay $600 for an unlocked iPhone. So poo on that. Nyah!
Hmm.... I'm kind of in the same situation as Cassandra. First of all, I really, really need a PDA device. My line of work demands it and I am starting to feel a little silly filling out my patient schedules in a torn up appointment book full of scratches and white out. I am also interested in the medical and pharmacological software available for PDAs. It'd be nice to have drug database at my fingertips. At the same time, I do have Cingular but I'm in need of a new cellphone. The one I'm using is pretty beat up and the screen goes wonky from time to time. Haven't had any problems with Cingular's service though. It's been great. No dropped calls and almost always good quality. The iPhone definitely looks like a neat gadget but I hate the touch screen idea. I'd much rather buy the Palm Treo smartphone. It may be bulkier, but at least it has a physical keypad. And it is compatible with more phone services and is probably less restrictive as far as 3rd party software goes. http://www.palminfocenter.com/news/9134/palm-treo-680-review/ It'd be really nice to have an all-in-one PDA, cell phone, calculator, notepad, camera, eBook reader, etc... less clutter in my bookbag and probably more professional. I'll probably stil hang onto my mp3 player though. I have over 20gigs of music and none of these devices come close to offering that amount of space. Well, the iPhone does but I don't want to pay 600 dollars for that thing.
